Gender-based violence is real, and it’s happening on our campuses. It takes many forms, from sexist jokes and inappropriate touching to stalking, coercion, and harassment. And none of it is OK. 
In the TUSA Student Council, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported, no matter who they are or where they study. That’s why we’re launching a campaign to make sure GBV is no longer ignored, laughed off, or excused. 
Whether it’s standing up to your mates, calling out inappropriate behaviour, or just making sure your friend gets home safe. Small actions matter. 

Together, we’ll unpack what disrespect looks like in digital spaces, relationships, classrooms, public areas, and more. Through posters, conversations, art, and student-led stories, we’ll challenge what’s been normalised and and create a stronger culture of respect and care. 

Let’s look out for each other. Let’s speak up.

My name is Heidi Jewel. I have lived in Nipulana/Hobart for the past five years after originally moving from Ballina, which is within the Bundjalung Nation in NSW. I moved down to Nipulana/Hobart to study a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Gender Studies, before moving into a Master's of Social Work. I spend a lot of my time these days (when I'm not being bombarded by uni work) sitting around at different cafes thinking about drawing an artwork and then procrastinating on that (much like every other project I have).

I began with detailed black ink illustrations, but craved colour, so I grabbed coloured pencils and never looked back. Now, my process is all about seeing how many colours I can cram onto a page. I spend ages drafting, then even longer blending each hue into the final piece. Every artwork tells a story through symbolism; nothing is random. Even recurring motifs like red ribbons and coffee cups reflect bits of me. I’m inspired by my mother and grandmother, both artists, and by my own social work journey. During placement, I started replacing PowerPoint presentations with art—partly out of passion, partly out of protest. I create to process thoughts and feelings that are hard to articulate, and my art helps me reflect deeply on my inner world. I take commissions (mainly by request) and recently started sharing my work on Instagram @pastel.espresso.
