What is roller derby?

Roller derby is a competitive full-body contact sport. It's played on a flat elliptical track, and players wear quad roller skates and protective padding (helmets, mouth guards, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards). We play under the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rules.

Do I need to know how to skate to join?

Nope! We'll teach you everything you need to know from lacing your skates, to learning how to fall (correctly) and being the best skater you can be!

What do the skill levels mean? And how do I level up?

Accepted Answer

L0: Just joined and have not learned how to safely fall or skate effectively (No hitting)
L1: Has passed L1 assessment proving they understand the skating fundamentals (Balance & Agility, Skating Posture & Stride, Falls & Recovery, and Basic Stops). L1 skaters are approved to start learning about light contact on skates. 
L2: Has passed L2 assessment proving that they understand contact fundamentals (Balance & Agility, Skating & Focus, Hopping, Pack Skills, and Speed). L2 skaters are ready to learn hitting and harder contact with speed checks.
L3: Has passed L3 assessment proving they are bouting eligible (Skating & Transitions, Blocking/Contact, and Pack Drills). L3 skaters are ready to practice at full hitting intensity without speed checks.
Bouting Skaters (BS): L3 + 180 min of scrim

What's the risk?

Roller derby has some inherent hazards associated with it, but safety is always first. Safety gear consists of knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet, and a mouth guard. Before you are allowed to play, you must first learn (and prove you've learned) basic skating skills to ensure you won't hurt yourself or others. Don't worry, we'll teach you! There are also a lot of rules in place to make sure everyone stays safe. Penalties are issued for numerous grievances, like elbowing or tripping, and these are all to keep the game clean and reduce risk of injury.

When is practice?

The practices are divided by skill level, meaning that when you just join, you can attend 2 practices a week, and our highest-level skaters can practice 3 times a week. Attendance is not mandatory but taken into account for Bout line-ups.

Saturday ___ pm -- L0s and L1s
Saturday ___ pm -- L2s and up
