How to recover deleted Instagram messages in 3 ways

Instagram doesn't have a built-in way to undo a deleted message. Once you remove a DM from a conversation, it disappears from your chat list and there's no "undo" button. But the data may still exist in other places. You can request a copy of your Instagram data from Meta, check your Android notification history, or try a third-party recovery app to get old messages back.

Does Instagram's Recently Deleted feature work for messages?

No. Instagram's Recently Deleted feature lets you restore posts, Reels, and Stories you've removed within the past 30 days (24 hours for Stories). But it does not apply to direct messages. If you delete a DM, Recently Deleted won't save it.

That's why you'll need one of the three workarounds below.

3 ways to recover deleted Instagram messages

1. Download your Instagram data from Meta

Even after you delete a message from a conversation, Instagram's servers may still hold a copy. Meta keeps deleted data in its systems for up to 90 days before permanently removing it. You can request a download of your information to get a copy of everything tied to your account, including old messages.

This works on both iPhone and Android:

1. Open Instagram and go to your profile
2. Tap the menu icon in the top right corner
3. Select "Your activity"
4. Scroll down and tap "Download your information"
5. Tap "Request a download"
6. Choose the data you want (select "Messages" to keep the file smaller)
7. Pick your file format (HTML is easier to read, JSON is easier to search)

Meta will email you when your file is ready. You'll have four days to download it. The messages won't return to your DM inbox, but you'll have a readable copy you can reference or save.

Keep in mind: If more than 90 days have passed since deletion, the data may no longer be available. Also, this only includes messages you sent or received. If the other person deleted their messages, those won't appear in your download.

2. Check notification history on Android

If you're on Android 11 or newer, your phone may have already saved a preview of deleted messages through its built-in notification log. This only works if you had both Instagram notifications and Notification History turned on before the messages were deleted.

Here's how to check:

1. Open your phone's Settings app
2. Tap "Notifications"
3. Select "Advanced settings" (on some devices this is "Notification history")
4. Toggle on Notification History if it isn't already

Once enabled, you'll see a running log of recent notifications, including message previews from Instagram. This won't show full conversation threads, but you can see the first few lines of messages you received.

Limitations: You can only see messages you received, not messages you sent. The notification log also has limited storage, so older notifications may have already been overwritten. This feature isn't available on iPhone.

3. Use a third-party recovery app

Third-party data recovery apps scan your phone's cache and local storage for traces of deleted information. Some of these apps can find old Instagram messages, along with photos, texts, and other files.

Before downloading any recovery tool, do your homework:

• Check whether the app requests more permissions than it needs

• Avoid apps that ask for your Instagram login credentials

What about vanish mode messages?

Messages sent in vanish mode disappear as soon as the recipient closes the chat. Instagram does not store vanish mode messages on its servers, so they won't appear in your data download or anywhere else. Once they're gone, there's no recovering them.

How to permanently delete messages on both sides

If your goal is the opposite (you want to make sure a message stays deleted) you can unsend it. Tap and hold the message, then select "Unsend" from the menu. This removes the message from both your conversation and the recipient's.

The catch: if they already saw it through a notification or opened the chat before you unsent it, they know what it said. They might have screenshotted it too. Speed matters here.

How to avoid losing important messages in the future

A few habits that can save you from digging through data downloads later:

• Screenshot important conversations. If a DM contains an address, confirmation, or anything you might need later, screenshot it before the conversation moves on.
• Turn on notification history (Android). Even if you don't need it today, having this running in the background means you'll have a backup the next time something gets deleted.
• Export your data regularly. You can request a data download from Instagram at any time. Doing this once every few months gives you a searchable archive of your conversations.
