While I was Away : People In Time

- Name: ** NJOVU** ( ELEPHANT )
- Location: ** Murchison Falls National Park (MFNP) ** 
- Status: Endangered. 
- Population: Approximately 415,000.
- Scientific name: Loxodonta Africana.
- Height: 11 feet shoulder height, Length 19-24 feet.
- Weight: 6 tons.

The African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. African elephant populations have fallen from an estimated 12 million a century ago to some 400,000. In recent years, at least 20,000 elephants have been killed in Africa each year for their tusks. African forest elephants have been the worst hit. Their populations declined by 62% between 2002-2011 and they have lost 30% of their geographical range, with African savanna elephants declining by 30% between 2007-2014. This dramatic decline has continued and even accelerated with cumulative losses of up to 90% in some landscapes between 2011 and 2015.

- Name: ** ENKULA ** ( RHINOCEROS )
- Location: ** UGANDA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER ** 
- Status: Near threatened. 
- Population: Approximately 18,000 
- Scientific name: Ceratotherium simum
- Height: 5-6 feet
- Weight: 3,080-7,920 pounds
According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2008, the status of southern white rhinos is Near Threatened. Now there is a world population of over 17,500 mainly in Southern Africa but with a small population of around 350 in Kenya. The Uganda population is to date numbered 16 with two at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre and fourteen at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Name: Ekisode ( Mountain Gorilla)
Location: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP)
Status: Endangered
Population: More than 1,000
Scientific name: Gorilla beringei beringei
Height: 4 to 5 ½ feet when standing on two feet
Weight: up to 440 lbs

This is one of two subspecies of the eastern gorilla. It is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with a total population of 1,004 individuals divided into two populations as of 2018. One group dwells in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, while the other lives in three national parks in the Virunga Mountains.

#17 The Hungry Ape

Name: EMPOLOGOMA ( LION)
Location: Kidepo Valley National Park(KVNP)

Status: Vulnerable.
Population: Approximately 20,000.
Scientific name: Panthera leo.
Height: 4 to 5 ½ feet when standing on two feet.
Weight: 242-517 lbs.
Lions are currently listed as "Vulnerable" on the (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Today, lions are extinct in 26 African countries, have vanished from over 95 per cent of their historic range, and experts estimate that there are only about 20,000 left in the wild.

#19  THE REST

- Name: ** Ng'aali ** ( Grey Crowned Crane )
- Location: ** The Wild of Uganda ** 
- Status: Endangered. 
- Population: Approximately 33,500 
- Scientific name: Balearica regulorum gibbericeps

Populations in many areas including Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Namibia have experienced very rapid declines. Overall estimates suggest that the species’ global population has declined from over 100,000 individuals in 1985 to 50,000-64,000 individuals in 2004. This implies that the species may have declined by over 50% in 19 years, and when these data are extrapolated to a period of 45 years in the past (1967-2012) or past and future (1985-2030), assuming an exponential trend, the calculated rate of decline is c.65-79%. Declines are attributed primarily to habitat loss and fragmentation and illegal removal of birds and eggs from the wild for food, traditional use, domestication and the international illegal trade market.
