What is the eligibility criteria?

To be eligible, an applicant must:

• Age: You must be 16 to 18 years old at the time of enrolment at your allocated college.

• Current Grade: You must be enrolled in Grade 10, Grade 11, or Grade 12 at the time of application.

• Residency or Citizenship: You must be a South African citizen (living anywhere globally), a permanent resident, or a registered refugee residing in South Africa.

• Language Proficiency: You must have functional English proficiency, as teaching across UWC campuses is conducted in English.

• Values: You must show commitment to social responsibility, sustainability, and cross-cultural respect.

Should I apply through the National Committee (NC) or the Global Selection Programme (GSP)?

What academic marks do I need to apply?

Applicants should maintain strong academic results, aiming for a high B average (70% or above) or placement in the top 10% of their grade; whichever of the two is higher.

As a guideline, this is generally how it looks across school systems:

- National Senior Certificate (NSC / CAPS): An overall average of Code 6 (70%–79%) or Code 7 (80%–100%) across core subjects.

- IEB (Independent Examinations Board): An overall average of Level 6 or Level 7.

- Cambridge / GCSE / IGCSE: Passes in at least 5 subjects with A*, A, or B grades.

- American High School System: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.

What documents must I prepare in advance?

• Contextual Achievements: Leadership in local community groups, or community facing self-directed projects carries equal weight to formal school sports or paid clubs.

What is the step-by-step selection timeline?

• October 2026: Online application portal opens.

• Early January 2027: Applications close.

• Late January 2027: Invitations sent for regional interviews.

• Early February 2027: National selection interviews take place.

• Late February / March 2027: Successful candidates receive nominations to specific UWC colleges.

How long is the UWC programme?

UWC is specifically a 2-year programme (equivalent to the South African Grade 11 and Grade 12).

If selected, you will be required to complete the full two years of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma regardless of the grade you are in upon application or your age when you commence.

Meaning, whether you are applying as a student in Grade 10, or having completed Grade 12, you will still have to undergo both years of the IB diploma.

Because many students re-apply, your peers will be of all eligible ages and often have varying levels of education prior to joining UWC.

Where will I study if selected?

The UWC movement comprises 18 international schools and colleges spread across four continents (including our regional campus, Waterford Kamhlaba in Eswatini).

Successful applicants are nominated by our National Committee to complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at one of these global campuses.

Should we wish to apply directly to a specific school, you can do so via the GSP programme, however GSP is unfunded, so you will have to pay all the fees yourself and become ineligible for financial aid from the UWC movement.

What subjects are offered in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

Students select 6 subjects (3 at Higher Level + 3 at Standard Level) across six subject groups:

• Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature

• Group 2: Language Acquisition

• Group 3: Individuals and Societies (e.g. History, Economics, Global Politics)

• Group 4: Sciences (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems)

• Group 5: Mathematics

• Group 6: The Arts (or an additional subject from Groups 1–4)

Core Requirements: Every student completes 3 mandatory core elements alongside their subjects:

• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course exploring the nature of knowledge.

• Extended Essay (EE): An independent 4,000-word research paper.

• Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Experiential projects focusing on physical activity, creative expression, and community outreach.

Yes, we certainly encourage it! We appreciate the tenacity it takes to reapply, and many students across the UWC movement successfully make it on their 2nd try. Age is an important requirement, so provided you are still between the ages of 16–18 at the time of enrolment, and meet the rest of the requirements outlined in the eligibility criteria above, you are most welcome to apply again.

Yes. Higher education institutions worldwide accept the IB Diploma.

• South African Universities: IB graduates apply to Universities South Africa (USAf) for a Foreign Matriculation Exemption Certificate to qualify for local public university entry.

• International Universities: UWC graduates regularly gain admission to universities across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Dedicated global scholarship funds (such as the Davis UWC Scholars Program) offer university funding opportunities for UWC alumni studying in the United States.

• DO NOT submit outdated and/or recycled academic and community references. They must be written for the UWC application.

• DO NOT use AI generated responses. We are able to recognise AI writing, therefore your application may be at risk if you don’t use your authentic voice.

• DO NOT submit incomplete documentation. Partial reports, references, or missing documents delay processing and may disqualify your application.

Can my family move with me, or stay on campus when visiting?

• Family Relocation: No. UWC placements and scholarship awards apply strictly to individual students. Campuses operate as residential institutions for enrolled students only, so family members cannot relocate or reside on campus.

• Parental Visits: No, on-campus visitor accommodation is provided. Parents visiting students must arrange private lodging in guest houses or hotels in neighbouring towns.
