What is Taido?

Taido (躰道) – roughly translated as “the way of the mind and body” – a dynamic Japanese martial art with roots from Okinawan Karate. It was created by Seiken Shukumine over 50 years ago and it combines striking with three-dimensional movement.

Taido is a martial art designed to promote creativity and cooperation, and is practiced internationally. It is characterized by two main factors: use of footwork and acrobatic movements, change of the body axis for simultaneous attack and defense.

What is the UNSW Taido Club?

The UNSW Taido Club is a student club at the University of New South Wales that has been running for over 25 years. We teach the Japanese martial art of Taido and are proud to have been the first Taido club in Australia. Our instructors are world-class: our members include medal holders in international Taido competitions!

What is the beginners course?

Accepted Answer

The UNSW Taido beginners course is a 10 session training course run over 5 weeks. During the course, you will learn the basics of Taido, including strikes, rolls, and Taido stances. After completion of the course, you will be able to continue training with the club to work toward grading for your first belt level.

Question 4

What do I need for the beginners course? Do I have to buy a uniform?

Accepted Answer

You will need to wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in, such as a t-shirt and track pants, and bring a bottle of water. A towel to wipe your sweat is also recommended! We do not require beginners to wear a uniform for the course.
