The CFC forest is primarily a research and education forest but also open to public recreation and gathering as long as the CFC mission and Forest Use Guidelines are respected. We consider our internal forest roads to be our “Trail System”; there are also a few single-track footpaths around the forest. Recommended loops (see Walking Trails map) start and finish from the main parking lot and are labeled along the way with color-coded tags.

2023 Year in Review for the Cloquet Forestry Center & Hubachek Wilderness Research CenterFrom the Director’s DeskAs I sit down to write this note I cannot help but look outside and wonder, where is winter? After last year’s almost record-breaking snow amounts, this year’s winter is shaping up to be warm and wet. It is so different from the norm, it is so different from what I am used to, that it makes me a bit uncomfortable.

All forest roads and trails at the U of MN Cloquet Forestry Center are open to non-motorized recreational use throughout the year. Five colored walking routes are marked on the forest to aid all-season visitor wayfinding of our forest roads and trails (Yellow, Red, Orange, Green and Blue). Winter 2025-2026 classic ski groom will be on the marked routes on the west side of University Rd (all routes but the Blue loop). All other internal forest roads are open for backcountry skiing, snowshoeing and other types of human-powered winter recreation (e.g. Blue loop). Restrooms: There are restrooms and drinking fountains available in the Classroom and Administration Building during normal business hours (Mon-Fri). These are typically not available on nights and weekends. There are no public restrooms in the Regional Extension Office located nearest the trailhead. Please be respectful of these spaces and plan accordingly! Dec. 9, 2025 LBJ
