Print publication series based on continual remix from an open-source, controlled library of our own writing, art, and design.Issue 1 "FLAT" explores and expresses what we observe as the flattening, flatness, and related qualities of living in the world today.⁠INDEX—1 "Flat" was written, designed and published simultaneously as a periodical and shared file. The periodical embraces the flatness of on demand printing – like photocopying before, and hand printing before that, it celebrates the idea of an infinite facsimile. But like photocopying and hand printing each version is subtly different, slightly decayed by the differences in machinery, hand work, paper-stock, trimming, binding and shipping. The book you will receive is edition#1 and it will not be as we intended, but an interpretation of what we intended through the medium of distributed printing – please share with us the differences, abnormalities or mistakes and and we will incorporate them in to edition#2. INDEX is inspired by the manicule aesthetic and behavior. The manicule ☞ was a symbol produced by the reader, not the publisher, to indicate and point at notable parts of the text. Usually seen in the form of a pointing hand in the margins of the text, the manicule (from the Latin maniculum or “little hand”) has been around since ancient times, but lost favor during the advent of the printing press which pushed off the manicule with industry accepted footnoting devices such as the * and the dagger: †.
