The ancient theatre of Cassope is built in the southern foothills of Zaloggo and overlooks the peninsula of Preveza, the Ambracian Gulf, the Ionian Sea, the island of Lefkada and the Acarnanian mountains.

It was originally built in the 3rd BCE. Two polygonal retaining walls, reinforced with buttresses, support the two ends of the koilon (the seating area or auditorium), which is separated by an intervening diazoma (horizontal walkway) into two main seating zones, the lower one consisting of twenty-four rows of stone seats and the upper one of twelve rows.

At the top of the auditorium, a wider walkway is protected by an outer wall that has an opening, possibly facilitating the exit of spectators from the upper part of the theatre.

Eleven stairways divide the theatre into ten kerkides (vertical seating zones), the ones at the two edges having half the width of the others.

The orchestra of the theatre, is unique, since it does not form a full circle, but an arc greater than a semicircle.

The scene (backstage building) is rectangular, flanked by two paraskenia (wings) which extend on either side of the orchestra and contain the proskenion (stage), which has six columns on its facade.

The theatre would have had a seating capacity of approximately 5.000 – 6.000 people.

The Ancient Greek Theatre of Gitanae was built in the mid-3rd century BC, a time of increased building activity in Epirus, and destroyed by the Romans in 167 BC.

The theatre is built on the lower level of the settlement, outside the walls, and is protected by a rampart.

It seems that the theatre was originally built in stone, mainly using white limestone. The orchestra forms a full circle which contains an inscribed square and is intersected by the proscenium.

The cavea consists of 28 tiers of seats with two passageways, while there may also have been an amphitheatre.

The theatre seats are made of carefully-dressed limestone, and many bears incised inscriptions with names on the front side.

The stage is a rectangular stone building measuring 15.50m x 5.50m. Inside it was discovered a colonnade consisting of seven rectangular pillars, which would have supported the roof of the stage building.

In the centre of the stage is a doorway through which the actors would have entered, while the floor is made of rubble and beaten earth.

The façade of the stage forms a proscenium whose stylobate (base) is preserved to a length of 15.50 m. and an average width of 0.50 m. There were square parascenia on either side of the stage.

The ancient theatre at Delphi was built further up the hill from the Temple of Apollo giving spectators a view of the entire sanctuary and the valley below.

It was originally built in the 4th century BCE but was remodelled on several occasions, particularly in 160/159 BCE at the expense of king Eumenes II of Pergamon and in 67 CE on the occasion of Emperor Nero's visit.

The koilon leans against the natural slope of the mountain whereas its eastern part overrides a little torrent that led the water of the fountain Cassotis right underneath the temple of Apollo.

The orchestra was initially a full circle with a diameter measuring 7 meters.

The rectangular scene building ended up in two arched openings, of which the foundations are preserved today.

Access to the theatre was possible through the parodoi, i.e. the side corridors. On the support walls of the parodoi are engraved large numbers of manumission inscriptions recording fictitious sales of the slaves to the god.

The koilon was divided horizontally into two zones via a corridor called diazoma. The lower zone had 27 rows of seats and the upper one only 8. Six radially arranged stairs divided the lower part of the koilon into seven tiers. The theatre could accommodate about 4,500 spectators.

“Never has a theatre audience had such a show before them.” Thus wrote Goethe of the Greek Theatre of Taormina in his famous "Italian Journey" travelogue.

The Ancient Theatre of Taormina is the second largest of its kind in Sicily, after the Greek Theatre of Syracuse.

Built-in the 3rd century BC, carved out of the hard rock of Monte Tauro, it could welcome thousands of spectators.

The Greeks, who occupied the Taormina area in 403 BC, built the theatre, which was remodelled a century later by the Romans, who had conquered Taormina and made it a Roman colony.

The Ancient Theatre of Taormina is located on a promontory that affords a magnificent view of the Ionian coast and Mount Etna.

The Greeks erected their most important buildings and monuments in harmony with nature. Just as the light and air filtered through the columns, the natural scenery was also perfectly integrated with the architecture of the theatre.

Construction on the Theatre of Delos began shortly after 314 BC and was completed 70 years later.

The koilon (cavea), the audience area, was supported by a sturdy marble retaining wall. It is divided into two sections, upper and lower, of 26 and 17 tiers, respectively, with a seating capacity of approximately 6,500 spectators.

The seats in the first row (the proedria) have been best preserved and are the only seats with back support, as they were reserved for honoured persons.

The semicircular orchestra, which was the main part of the theatre, was closed on its straight side by the skene, the stage-building and dressing rooms, a rectangular structure with the external dimensions of 15.26 x 6.64 m. with three entrances on the east side and another on the west.

In front of the skene was the proskenion, a colonnade 2.67 m. high with Doric semi-columns between which were movable painted panels.

The metopes on the proskenion entablature were decorated with relief tripods and bulls’ heads.

Southwest of the theatre has preserved the remains of altars and sanctuaries dedicated to Artemis-Hecate, Apollo, Dionysus, Hermes and Pan.

An impressive structure is the great cistern of the Theatre, which collected rainwater from the cavea via a duct running around the orchestra. In its roof, which was supported on eight elegant granite arches, were well-mouths from which the water was drawn.

The Greek Theatre of Syracuse lies on the south slopes of Temenite hill, overlooking the modern city of Syracuse in southeastern Sicily. It was first built in the 5th century BC, rebuilt in the 3rd century BC and renovated again in the Roman period.

Today, it is a part of the Unesco World Heritage Site of "Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica".
