Molly is an athlete and a dancer. We did created a set of dance and movement images in a studio in Los Angeles back in 2017. The elegance of this pose as she executes a full split combined with a soulful expression as if she is revealing a bit of herself with me during this photoshoot.

Leap of Faith

There is a simple and quiet elegance that speaks to me about this image. It reminds me of when I photograph a yogi. Sometimes the simplest poses like a forward fold can be gentle, soft, and healing to the body and mind.

Folding Forward

This image was created with the concept of a solo dancer without a partner. She dances for herself and the only barriers are self imposed. The slightest push and the wall will come down and she is free to move wherever she wants to go.

The World is Waiting for Her

When we think of ballet dancers we immediately think of the beautiful ballerinas with graceful lines, fluid movement, and the gorgeous form of a woman's body . Males are the masculine opposite of female ballerinas while still maintaining those graceful movements and precise poses. I find so much beauty in the male form with muscle tone and texture that are showcased in the highlights and shadows of a B&W portrait. When photographing women I look for the outline of the body, with men it's the details or landscape of the body.

Dancing on Air

Why We Dance - OpenSea

When all seems lost we anchor ourselves in the present moment and connect to the self.

Yoga teacher Jason Anderson ended his yoga practice with this pose and it was the perfect ending. The symmetry of the body in this pose resonates deeply with me. His head is bowed, eyes closed, and he is completing 5 full breath cycles before breaking the pose. Yoga is about connection of the mind, body, and spirit through the breath. This piece embodies calm and peacefulness with oneself to be perfectly as ease.

Isle of man

A chilly and stormy morning as we trekked out onto the jetty. Jake is a formally trained ballet dancer as well as an acrobat and yogi. The pose is Warrior 3 and is challenging to hold indoors on a yoga mat. He had the stormy wind and the uneven rocks under his feet and was able to simply float into Warrior 3 and hold it for 5 breaths. In the midst of chaos, Jake was able to find a few moments of calm and stillness.

Learning to Fly

Keith Mitchell is a former linebacker for the New Orleans Saints NFL football team. His football career ended with injuries that left him temporarily paralyzed from the neck down for a period of 6 months. His yoga journey started with meditation to help him adjust to the reality of his injuries in order to eventually heal his physical body. Once he was able to start a physical practice (asana) he began to slowly heal and build back his muscle mass, strength, and range of motion in his body.
This image was from the second photoshoot with did together and I was amazed at how well his practice has improved from the first shoot. This pose is called Boat pose and is considered an advance variation of the posture that strengthens the abdominal muscles and hip flexors while also stretching the spine and hamstrings.

Balanced Life

Watching and photographing Anthony as he worked through sequences and poses was like watching a choreographed ballet. The movement was fluid, precise, and felt so well practiced. It was as if there was music playing that only he could hear. 

I felt a shyness from Anthony and it was an unspoken agreement between us that we were perfectly as ease with the quiet and decided not to fill it with chatter. We both revolved around each other in harmonious energy.

Suspended in Time

Dylan Werner is considered a master handbalancer in the yoga community and teaches classes & workshops on strength building for arm balances and inversions. He is a Marine Corps Veteran, former firefighter, and rock climbing enthusiast. When he started doing yoga the physical movement, handstands, and the workout was what kept him going back. A teacher training in Mexico introduced him to yoga philosophy, the sutras, and the spiritual part of the practice which is connection. Yoga means to connect to the mind, body, and spirit through breath. 

It is through connection that we are able to balance our inner self and our physical body with the world around us.

Connecting the pieces

Joel is a rather quiet unassuming man with bold tattoos that cover most of his body. All of his tattoos are spiritual designs, mandalas, and sanskrit. 

This image was composed to show the design of his tattoos, but adding the human element of his hands lightly grasping the bottoms of his feet as his bent backwards in a deep heart opening backbend called "camel pose."
