I managed end-to-end customer success and digital transformation projects across Northern Europe. This included everything from pre-sale scoping to onboarding, automation design, and renewal. I delivered marketing automation programmes for brands like Vivienne Westwood, JYSK, Pepsi, and Three Mobile. I also built advanced email workflows, using my technical skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and APIs to drive measurable results and long-term performance improvements.

What does James do when he is not working?

Running is a big part of my life. It keeps me fit, helps me clear my head, and has introduced me to some great people through local run clubs. My partner and I often explore new cities by heading out for a run together. I also play Australian Football, a fast-paced team sport that mixes rugby and football, and I'm currently training for triathlons. Golf has become a new weekend hobby too (which continues to remind me that resilience and consistency is key). I enjoy reading and recently loved Natives, Greenlights, and Liar’s Poker. I also ran a Brighton-based tech meetup called Tech Jumpstart and plan to restart it in Vancouver.

What was your biggest challenge working across 100+ retailers?

The biggest challenge has been navigating the differences in local regulations, data requirements, and cultural attitudes toward AI. In some markets, AI can be polarising, even when it clearly drives ROI. The key has been delivering experience in a way that feels trustworthy, consistent, and relevant to each retailer. Scaling that across so many partners hasn’t been easy, but it’s given me invaluable experience in adapting global strategies to local needs.

How did you build the AI Persona Agent?

I lead the project where we looked at thousands of past customer conversations across different retailers and grouped them based on the questions people asked and the outcomes they led to, like purchases, clicks, or abandonment. From there, we created audience personas and built AI agents that simulate their behaviour. These agents now help us test and optimise how we talk to different types of customers in real time. It's made Zoe, our AI assistant, much more personalised. At Staples, this approach led to a further 26% increase in click-through rate because it increased confidence in conversations.

What AI insights can you get?

We can see what different buying personas care about most. For example, with educational shoppers at Staples, we learned that highlighting storage, camera quality, and especially cloud storage makes them more likely to engage or convert. On the other hand, focusing too much on design or productivity features can actually reduce performance. These insights help us tailor conversations and content to what really matters to each audience.

Who else have you worked with besides Microsoft that you are proud of?

Dyson stands out for me. It was one of my first major accounts at Zoovu, and I grew it from 33 assistants in a single category to over 99 assistants across multiple product lines. At one point, a major internal reorganisation on their side left the account at risk. I built a new governance model, secured senior sponsorship, and set up a regular leadership cadence. This lead to a large scale data enrichment project across 33 locales and experience redesign across 99 assistants increasing TCV by 20%.  That structure is still in place today and has supported their recent expansion into new AI projects.

What technical skills do you use in your role?

Yes, during my time at Mapp I developed the ability to read and edit HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and work with REST APIs. I’m not a developer, but I can confidently work with prewritten code and translate between technical and business teams. This skill has been invaluable in startup environments, where bridging that gap is key to moving fast, reducing risk, and delivering global projects successfully. It’s played a big part in how I’ve driven innovation with customers.

What’s been your proudest career moment?

One that really stands out is when the GM at Microsoft shared a testimonial about my work during a Zoovu Offsite in Prague. The Zoovu leadership played it to the whole company (my cheeks went a little red) and the whole room stood up and applauded. It meant a lot to me. The AI project hadn’t always been easy, but it taught me a huge amount about resilience, ownership, and solving problems. The programme is a career defining moment. Hearing those words from Ram made it all worth it.

I led the Zoovu and Microsoft Azure partnership, managing go-to-market planning, commercial enablement, and Azure Marketplace integration, and secured an FY25 Azure AI Design Win for Microsoft’s CSO “Help Me” program. My work has span Microsoft’s three solution areas: AI Business Solutions, Cloud and AI Platforms, and Security, each linked to measurable customer outcomes. I’ve deployed more than 50 AI experiences and can demonstrate alignment with Microsoft’s Retail and Consumer Goods priorities, improving shopper engagement and data-driven merchandising. I’ve also led cross-functional v-teams and worked closely with Azure teams to deliver solutions that support customer AI strategies and Microsoft’s growth goals.
