Moving The Crate

Description "Ghost Boxer #1" -- 2010, Oil on Canvas, 36" x 24" This piece was one of 4 where I experimented with the value of the flesh. I thought what would it look like if I made the flesh the value (and mostly the color) of clouds? Before that I'd done a series on having the figures in an atmospheric haze and one where I imagined a finished, realistic painting submerged in a muddy pond and values, details and edges would resolve into full clarity or be mostly or even completely lost in the random swirls of murkiness. Ghost Boxers #1

Description "King" charcoal, pastel, and oil glaze on paper -- This was a large piece that appeared in my very first show. King (on the left) was a pro i used for several pieces. This first show - which was my big roll of the dice to become a fine artist -- was a sell out and this was one of the very first pieces to show that night. Had it not worked out as it did, I would have just kept at it. To me, being able to make a living at what I loves was a distant second to the love itself. It was pure joy drawing the incredible structures on King's face. That cheekbone and jaw! Kneeling

Description "Reclining Nude" oil on panel -- I love contrast. So the idea of the relatively broad simple shapes of a relaxed reclining figure from behind contrasted with complexity of carefully composed hands was an idea a went to several times. In this piece, notice how the tension slowly builds from the lower back up through the shoulder blade and around to the hands to create a transition from big and simple to small and complex.
