Henrico County Recreation & Parks invited me to design a mural that celebrates and brings attention to a lesser-known part of our local history. It shares the remarkable story of the courageous 14-year-old London Pleasants from Curles Neck Plantation.

Who's the person in this painting?

Although there's no existing picture of him, this portrait represents London, a brave 14-year-old who was enslaved at Curles Neck Plantation in Henrico County. He ultimately gained his freedom by joining the British Army during the American Revolutionary War.

How much time will it take to complete the mural?

The mural painting process kicked off on Thursday, June 18, and will take about two weeks to complete.

Generally, planning a mural from start to finish takes around 4 to 8 weeks. It begins with researching the subject and exploring its historical background, followed by hand sketching that matches the wall’s measurements and architectural features. Once the design is finalized, it is shared for approval. After getting the go-ahead, the wall is prepped with a primer. Then, the design is projected and carefully traced onto the wall, setting the stage for the final painting to come to life.
