Why do we do a Reclaim The Night March?

Everyone deserves to be safe from gender-based violence. All too often people are told to change their behaviour to avoid being assaulted or attacked (e.g. don't go outside at night, don't wear earphones, don't wear revealing clothes). Many women and girls report feeling less safe at night, or avoid certain areas out of fear.

Reclaim The Night is about standing against these ideas. It is about reclaiming spaces that would feel inaccessible to those who have experienced or may experience gender-based violence. No matter what someone is wearing, who they are, where they are, or what time of day it is - they should be safe from violence.

We want to shift the way we think about gender-based violence and place the blame where it belongs - at the feet of those who choose to harm others.

What format should my submission be in?

If you're designing your badge using canva or something digital, download it as an image (e.g. png, jpeg). If you're designing your badge using our template please scan it in and submit as a pdf.

Don't stress about the format too much though! If we run into any issues we will get in touch with you directly to sort them out.

Question 5

What should my design look like?

Your design should be bright, impactful and easy to see. You want it to say that gender-based violence is wrong and inspire people to take a stand at the Reclaim The Night March.

If you are wanting any words on it make sure that they are clear. Always remember that your design will need to be shrunk in order to fit the badges which will be 38mm in diameter.

Question 6

Can I stay anonymous?

We do ask that you give us information on who you are and how we can get in touch with you. That way we can chat to you if there's any issues with your design and let you know that you have won.

If you want to stay anonymous, we can share your design without any identifying information. For example, we might just say "this was designed by a young person aged 15." If this is something you're worried about, we can talk about it more if your design is selected.

Question 7

What will the selection process be?

The deadline for submissions is the 1st of November 2025. From there members of the East Ayrshire Violence Against Women Partnership will shortlist 10 designs for a public vote.

On our social media members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite design. We will then have one winner and the remaining shortlisted designs will be featured at our event at WG13 after this year's reclaim the night march (25th November 2025).

Question 8

How will I know if my design is chosen?

We will be in touch with you using the contact details that you give us in your form by 06/11/2025 if your design has been shortlisted for public vote.
