Despite our pride & culture, Puerto Rico’s economy has faced major crises throughout history, and still is. Under Spanish rule (1493-1898), strict trade limits hindered growth. After the U.S. takeover (1898), the economy relied on American-owned sugar plantations. The Great Depression (1929) deepened poverty, but Operation Bootstrap (1940s-1970s) industrialized the island. The repeal of Section 936 (1996-2006) led to massive job losses, worsening the 2006 recession. By 2015, Puerto Rico’s $72 billion debt was unpayable, leading to federal oversight. Hurricane María (2017) devastated infrastructure, and earthquakes (2020) worsened instability. The COVID-19 pandemic (2020) caused business closures and unemployment spikes. Today, inflation and economic uncertainty persist, but efforts to recover and diversify continue. We love our home, yet many of us can't live here because of the US. Most of us don't.
