Why "Penn & Kural"

“Penn” means woman in Tamil and “Kural” means voice. Together, it represents the power of women owning and expressing their stories.

“Penn” also carries a deeper connection to “pen,” symbolizing writing and self expression. It reflects not only voice, but storytelling, reflection and reclaiming our narratives in our own words.

Who is behind Penn & Kural?

Hi! I’m Kaya, the founder of Penn and Kural.
Penn & Kural was inspired by my experience becoming a first time mother in 2020, which highlighted how isolating motherhood and mental health challenges can be.

With a background in psychology and certification in Mental Health First Aid, I approach this work with care and intention. I work closely with other South Asian women who share this vision and together we create guided discussions and reflective spaces where women feel seen, supported and connected.

What can I expect at a workshop?

A safe and welcoming environment with guided activities, open discussions and moments of reflection. You are never forced to share and you are always invited to participate at your comfort level.

Do I need to have experience with mental health topics?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. Everyone’s life experiences are different and there is no one right way to navigate them. Our spaces are beginner friendly and designed to meet you where you are.

Are the workshops in English or French?

Workshops are conducted in English (Ateliers en anglais), so every participant can follow comfortably. Materials and instructions may also be provided in English, with French available on request.

Are the workshops in person or online?

Currently, our workshops are held in person in Montreal, Quebec.

Is this a therapy session?

Accepted Answer

No, Penn and Kural workshops are not therapy. They are community based, reflective spaces created to support and empower.

Question 10

Why is there a fee to attend?

Accepted Answer

We charge a minimal fee to help cover operational costs and fairly compensate the professionals we collaborate with. While we are not a non profit at this time, it is a future goal. Your support helps us continue this work. All workshop fees are non-refundable.

Can I bring my child to the workshop?

These are strictly no kids workshops. We’ve created this space to be focused, uninterrupted and fair for all attendees. We appreciate your understanding.
