About the Project

Last year, Paloma and Ola met through the Art/Sci Residency through ArtsEngine and UofM. They both worked on individual creative projects throughout and the year and decided to team up to create the CTRL+CREATE event with their shared passion of finding ways to share creative technologies that decentralize profit and foster creativity, beauty, and whimsy. CTRL+CREATE brings together artists from across SE Michigan to present their work, share demos, and talk about their experiences and artistry. This iteration, we welcome five artists, along with Paloma and Ola, who will give presentations that span music, culture, design, and more.

This workshop marks the commencement of Technology Beyond Profit, a new project that highlight technology used for art, culture, and social good without a
drive for profit. We hope that this will be the first of many workshops of this kind, and we’ll also be launching a website on this initiative in the coming months.

Through music, visuals, and a modular, interactive web-experience, this project
explores philosophical themes of the self vs. the other, metamorphosis, empathy at its endpoint extremes, and change on large time scales (climate, geology, evolution).
The name of the project, In Amber, also suggests themes of preservation through time: how can a being preserve themselves and their memory? Do digital memories, which we often think of as permanent, persist in time in the same way an insect persists trapped in amber? Breaking apart traditional narrative forms, this piece expresses its themes through fractaled storytelling, art, digital collage, sound, language, and interactive components.

An ever shifting ratio of audio and visual archives that weave cultural threads and tell us how noise, music and sound have shaped the world politically, socially and culturally. This project is a sensory journey through the echoes of cultural resistance, erasure, and renewal, using sound as both artefact and mirror. Inspired by Jacques Attali’s Noise: The Political Economyof Music and Stephen Kennedy’s Future Sounds: The Temporalityof Noise, this work probes into how noise shapes, disrupts, and redefines the world. Each audio and visual
phase—from resistance to erasure, with their eventual dialectic collisions—invites the audience to witness the resilience of communities, hear the undertones of displacement, and experience the sonic threads that bind us across borders and eras.
