I want to be very clear: Dr. Jen Hawkins herself is knowledgeable and capable. I was a patient with this clinic for over a year following a full hysterectomy, and Dr. Jen initially helped me achieve better hormonal balance during a very difficult time. My concern is not about her medical knowledge or intent.

My concern is with how this clinic communicates with patients and how patient concerns are handled—particularly through text messaging.

Recently, I became increasingly unwell and began experiencing significant symptoms consistent with hormone imbalance, including chest pain, nausea, sweating, brain fog, emotional numbness, joint and bone pain, hair thinning and breakage, acne, water retention, and overall decline in well-being. At one point, I seriously considered going to the ER. I reached out to explain what I was feeling, clearly stating that I am not a medical professional, only sharing observations and asking to speak in person with my physician.

Instead, my messages were interpreted as me “telling the doctor how to do her job.” That was never my intention. I repeatedly requested an in-person appointment because text is not an appropriate medium for nuanced hormone management. I was scheduled for January 8th.

Then, without warning, I woke up, (Dec. 31), to a message stating that my membership and care had been canceled entirely.

When I called for clarification, I was told that “staff felt uncomfortable” and that there had been “incidents over the last year,” yet no specific examples could be provided. I have never had a single issue with staff in person and have always been respectful and cooperative. Ultimately, the explanation centered around how my texts were perceived.

During that call, I offered feedback that if staff were concerned about the tone or content of my messages, it would have been far more appropriate to call me directly and ask how I was feeling, especially given my symptoms. I also stated that if I had actually spoken negatively about Dr. Jen or questioned her competence, that would have been an appropriate time to address or even end the relationship. I was told in response, “We are a private business and we can add or remove people as we see fit.”

Given the timing, I raised concerns about whether external factors or miscommunication may have contributed to the decision. I was told this was not the case. I am documenting this interaction because the sudden termination of hormone care significantly impacted my physical and mental health and left me without adequate transition or support.

Canceling a patient’s hormone care based on perceived tone in text messages is deeply concerning. Hormonal therapy directly impacts physical and mental health, and abruptly terminating care without transition, clear explanation, or support places patients at risk.

I also shared concerns that text-only communication creates misunderstandings and leaves patients feeling unsupported during vulnerable health situations. I was told this was “probably a miscommunication,” yet the cancellation of care remained unchanged.

I believed in Dr. Jen’s work and referred multiple paying patients to this clinic. I did not expect to be dismissed, mischaracterized, and dropped during a health crisis.

This clinic needs to seriously reevaluate:
-Its reliance on text messaging for complex medical care
-How patient advocacy is interpreted
-It's  process for ethically terminating care
-How patients experiencing acute symptoms are supported

Patients deserve clear communication, professionalism, and continuity of care-especially when dealing with hormone health.
