NEW BOOK: Running for Local Union Office
NEW BOOK: Running for Local Union Office
Do you think your union needs new leadership and a new direction? Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work? This book draws from decades of experience of labor activists who have run for office. It covers topics like: how union elections work, building a campaign team, flyers, mailings, raising money, getting out the vote, the law, and what to do after you win office. If you think we just need new faces at the union hall, then this is not the book for you. But if you want to run a campaign that unites members to build power, then you’ll benefit from the advice in this book.

Bring Member Power to the Table By Opening Up Bargaining
Since electing new leadership in 2022, Teamsters Local 135 in Indiana has completely changed the way it conducts negotiations. It’s using open bargaining to revitalize the local. Under the previous leadership, a small bargaining team negotiated behind closed doors. Gag orders ensured that members would know nothing about negotiations until an agreement was presented for a vote. “It would be the business agent and a couple of stewards,” says business agent Robert Doolin, who started out in 1998 at a warehouse that supplies Kroger. “I always hated this.
Steward's Corner: Respect Is the Foundation of Organizing
Steward's Corner: Respect Is the Foundation of Organizing
Solidarity among co-workers is your source of power against the employer. And one essential ingredient for solidarity is respect. In the workplace we typically don’t experience respect—we experience coercion. No matter how much the boss may call us “partners” or claim “we’re a family here,” the employment relationship is fundamentally undemocratic: The employer makes the decisions, and workers are required to comply. The union must be different in its DNA. Starting with the first building block of organizing, the one-on-one conversation, your goal is to show your respect for your co-workers.

Oil Tanker Mates Fight for First Contract Against Familiar Employer Stalling Tactics
Imagine sleeping each night above more than a million barrels of oil while navigating the open ocean, maneuvering through narrow channels, and passing beneath bridges in some of the country’s most congested waterways. The hours are long, the work is physically demanding, and the risks are ever present. That’s what licensed deck officers—chief mates, second mates, and third mates—do aboard oil tankers. These highly trained, federally licensed maritime professionals live and work on board ships for months at a time in an intense, high-pressure environment.

‘We Demand Freedom’: Immigrants on Strike in New Jersey Prison
On a patch of sidewalk on a busy industrial corridor in Newark, federal agents with rifles, metal batons, flak vests, and balaclavas faced off against unarmed activists with cardboard signs and a bullhorn. Detained workers could be heard on the soccer field behind the prison walls, shouting in Spanish, “¡Libertad!” (Freedom!) Ways to Support the StrikersShow up. On Saturday, May 30, ICE Out of NJ organizers are inviting members of the press and public to gather outside Delaney Hall at 9 a.m.

The Antidote to Organizing Burnout (w/ Teamsters Local 804 Organizer Antonio Rosario and Sarah Slichter, Movement of Rank-and-File Educators) | The Labor Notes Podcast
It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the boss’ relentless union busting (it’s why they do it!) and to get discouraged by lapses and disengagement by union leadership. It can also compound the difficulty of organizing—figuring out how to make a meeting worthwhile, how to connect with members when it feels like your shop floor is in disarray, or even getting through concrete tasks like drafting agendas and to-do lists when everything starts feeling heavy. That’s when a return to basic organizing principles—and coming up with structural solutions with our co-workers—may be the way forward. Teamsters Local 804 Organizer Antonio Rosario and Sarah Slichter from the Movement of Rank-and-File Educators, join the pod.
