🪨 Tamás Páll interview
🪨 Tamás Páll interview
I have been friends and collaborators with Tamás Páll for many years, but his latest video work, Rumble, was even a trip for me—in a good way. The 20-minute-long story begins to unfold in a hangar filled with Cybertrucks and pallet structures. On top of one of these structures, we see a window, anxiously opening and closing, that turns out to be the main character of the piece. Window—which I really like as a name—greets the audience (i.e., the viewers of the installation at the gallery), introduces itself, and tells that it used to be a future-making surveillance machine. When […]

“Recordings Belong to the People” — An Interview with Sound Archivist Ketevan Davitashvili – Easterndaze
Archives elicit an aura of discovery, secrecy, and age. The potential to unearth forgotten manuscripts, to “dig” through dust-covered boxes and emerge with something unexpected—these are often over-romanticized expectations we have before delving into a collection for the first time. But given the comparatively recent invention of recording technology and its rapid progression through different formats, sound archives in particular present a set of material problems: issues with practical preservation and the fragility of older, audibly aging media. Ketevan Davitashvili, a performer and sound artist from Tbilisi, Georgia, works as an archivist at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire and specializes in […]

Braille Satellite 2025: An Extraordinary Exercise in Community – Easterndaze
There is an amateur graffiti in Warsaw that reads ‘dear music, thank you’. Two weeks ago, I felt similar gratitude heading to Braille Satellite: a four-day festival taking place in Mushroom Manor, a forest park some 80 kilometres away from Vilnius. Curated and coordinated by Matas Labašauskas and Oscar Olias Castellanos – a Lithuanian/Spanish duo of DJs, diggers and organisers – it annually presents a plethora of outsider musicians, bedroom artists, retro legends and other wonderful weirdos. The festival is put together without any external sponsors, and the DIY spirit is present all around: from the international crew of volunteers […]

Jugoslavija Wave: New compilations revisiting the ex-Yu post-punk and new wave legacy – Easterndaze
If I had a single ticket for the time machine that could take me to any historical or prehistoric period, I admit I would impulsively use it for the 1980s. And I’d certainly be in for a disappointment. A decade is a mere flicker if we want to explore what’s happened musically inside it. It’s a bit like trying to grasp what exactly happened during the Big Bang by witnessing it firsthand. We’ve been slowly unpacking the 80s post punk and new wave for the last 45 years, and there’s still much to uncover, so many stones to turn. In […]

✊🏼 Saskó interview
Most people have heard of Sándor Kispál aka “Saskó,” through his electronic music programming at Gólya, the PÉNZ collective, or his DJ alter ego, csinovnyik. Last year marked the 5th anniversary of Orczy Street’s Gólya, and PÉNZ turns 10 this year, Saskó has gathered quite a lot of experience about, let’s say, the music industry – so that’s what we asked him about. Péter Bokor: Let’s begin with Gólya’s current standing, both in general and regarding the parties you organise. Do you think people have the need and the money to party these days? Can you reach your target audience? […]
🔦 Sofia's underground music scene
🔦 Sofia's underground music scene
We’ve sat on this article for too long because it’s hard to be objective and unbiased about something we’ve spent many years of our lives trying to be an active part of, and improve. It’s even harder to admit we’re not certain what the actual state of our scene is anymore, because we feel disconnected and irrelevant. What we think we observe does not seem homogeneous enough, or it is not headed towards a state that we can understand, explain, or predict.

“It is important for humans to produce signals similar to those in nature – because we often forget that we are also from nature.” This sentiment, described by Boštjan Perovšek and Brane Zorman (BBtrem.) after their performance, echoes in my head. Earlier that day, I happened to hitch a ride to the festival location with Juan López – a member of the organizational team of NiANSA, an atmospheric, exploratory sonic gathering in Slovenia. He is a Spanish biologist doing his PhD on animal communication in Ljubljana. Specifically, a PhD on the vibrational communication of insects – he explained, after I […]

🎷 Armenian Jazz
I am Lucia Kagramanyan, host of the NTS show Panorama Yerevan that showcases Armenian music in its huge variety. I am a DJ and selector, and now also a sound researcher and artist. My research into Armenian music started with my family ties and the Public Radio Archives. I got obsessed when I heard compositions that I had never heard before, and I thought I would put up a one-hour show, showing the beauty of Armenian music. It was not so popular back then when I started, and I am happy that Panorama Yerevan has become a beloved show. […]
🌬️ Jauna Muzika report
🌬️ Jauna Muzika report
There’s a certain looseness to the way sound moves through Vilnius during Jauna Muzika, which happened in April this year. It’s not just the acoustics—though they certainly matter—but the feeling of being let in on something that doesn’t need to be polished to be affecting. Now in its third decade, this year’s edition was curated by Sholto Dobie and themed around the amateur, not as a lack of skill, but as one who loves. Tuned into the quieter frequencies of collaboration, intuition, and risk, the festival unfolded across galleries, artist-run spaces, and informal venues. It felt less like a linear […]

When looking at any instance of in vivo nightlife culture, it’s interesting to see which of the following comes first: the rave, or the music; the physical manifestation of culture which precedes music, or the music’s cultural markers re-invoked.
🌳 CEE Festival Guide
🌳 CEE Festival Guide
From abandoned sanatoriums to fields and disused mills, these festivals and their places become acoustic laboratories where music takes on a physical presence. In recent years, Europe has witnessed a resurgence of music festivals that defy the rigid categories of mass events and commercial lineups. Alongside giant events that attract tens of thousands of participants and get lost in their own scale, niche and boutique festivals are gaining popularity. These intimate, carefully curated events offer much more than just music — they are an experience that engages all the senses, a form of cultural and artistic, and often spiritual, travel. […]
🕊 Belgrade’s Techno-Folk Uprising
🕊 Belgrade’s Techno-Folk Uprising
On the streets of Belgrade, music and counterculture have long been instruments of collective expression, resilience, and social critique. From the heady days of Yugoslavia’s New Wave in the 1980s, through the tumult of the 1990s turbo-folk propulsion, to the experimental electronic underground of the 2000s, the city has fostered generations of defiant artists. One of the more vivid continuations of this tradition is Antiboemska Veselja, or ANTIBO—a “techno-folk” or hyper-folk, is a phenomenon that emerges amidst radical politics, embraces rave euphoria, and marries it with Balkan folk energy. Part subculture, part communal ritual, ANTIBO offers an inclusive, intense space […]
