As the Trail Turns
As the Trail TurnsAmanda TimeoniPaperbackStep off the pavement and into the high-contrast friction of a life lived on the move. Combining sharp, episodic snapshots of remote back country isolation with the maddening, petty realities of the front line service gigs that fund it, this book offers an uncompromising look at life on the fringe.
From the sulfurous, high-speed momentum of a midnight escape out of Cleveland in 1990 to the silent canyons of the desert West, these vignettes trace the erratic cadence of human collision and absolute solitude. You will encounter the entitled whims of luxury RV tourists leaving complaints on tip envelopes, the psychological tension of strange encounters in isolated campground outposts, and the sterile, quiet traps of emotional winters.
But tucked between the paranoia and the social exhaustion are sudden, breathless oases of genuine connection—the infectious, rowdy joy of a farmhand who wants to watch every movie ever made, and the sun-drenched sanctuary of a canyon river where the wild reveals who we truly are.
Stripped of cheap sentimentality and traditional, sanitized wilderness brochures, these stories don't offer neat resolutions. They simply trust you to sit with the discomfort, the sharp humor, and the beautiful, terrifying reality of a life lived unperceived.
"Seriously so so brilliant. I don’t know if the author would call it this herself, but this book is a perfect example of prose poetry - beautiful, funny, memorable little snippets of hiker trash life. I read it in one sitting and wished there was more."- Tim Mathis, fellow dirtbag and author of The Dirtbag's Guide to Life: Eternal Truth for Hiker Trash, Ski Bums, and Vagabonds
"It's a RIOT! She has a wonderful eye for detail and quirky observations." - Doug Greene, author of From Grief to Grace: An Adventurer's Journey at the Brink of Blindness."
