Can you add more families to the giving circle?

Unfortunately, no, not at this time. We set up the giving circle with the consent of all the families, with the understanding that there would be seven. We are also completely at capacity. We sincerely apologize.

For allies: we encourage you to start your own giving circle and to reach out for any tips or resources, whether about giving circles or promoting survival funds more generally.

Can you help campaign for a family I help?

Accepted Answer

No, sorry. There's nothing I do that's particularly special in supporting the families I've committed to. Families need dedicated advocates to get them consistent support—for example, recurring options on Chuffed/GFM are a useful vehicle for getting small pledges to ensure steady support.

I encourage you to speak with the family, connect with their other allies, form a group chat with those allies, & brainstorm ideas for raising funds, including offline (e.g., events, flyering). This will do far more than I could ever do with my very limited capacity.

Why do you emphasize recurring donations?

Recurring donations ensure that Palestinians get help without the humiliating labor of asking for help or being visible online. They provide assurance of housing and recurring needs, such as medications. They also ensure reliability as the situation on the ground remains extremely fragile and volatile.

Giving

• FIRST: Give, if you can. Make it recurring, if you can. If there isn’t an option to, put it in your Calendar or Reminders to do so.

• NEXT: Tell people. Make it public. Post about it, tell your friends, tell your colleagues, text your family, post it on discord. Say that YOU gave. As Rasha Abdulhadi has said, “be loud.” The impact of this is huge. And it’s such a commonly-missed opportunity.

OTHER IDEAS:
• Have $$$? DM the host about matching!
• Pool funds among friends and send it together as one donation. It’s a really lovely idea and it builds your community. You’ll find yourself imagining things together rather than adrift, alone. You can also do this as a match - contact the host!
• Give a % of your business income

Question 5

Boosting

Accepted Answer

• First, many funds have ready-made graphics and social media presences from allies and families alike, so go to those and boost them with comments, shares, tags, DMs.

• Make a group chat: Find the allies who are sharing for the same campaign. If you don’t know any, ask the family. Include the campaign host if you can. Don’t just share your daily post to repost… brainstorm! What has everyone already tried? What worked? What is a useful short goal and deadline?

• Think about what can boost visibility without mass-tagging people. Examples: For every new donation, posting a new poem in the thread. A video-per-day challenge. The first person to give $25 gets a piece of art. If three people give X amount, you'll match.

Question 6

Making a flyer or graphic

• Get a QR code AND a shortlink (tiny, tinyurl), copy the campaign blurb, and put those two things in a Google Doc. Check with a family before using their photos.

• Flyers: You now have a printable flyer! Print and post up in / hand out in person, or ask someone to do this for you.

• Graphics: Use Canva templates to add the same information as above. Make sure to write some alt text for accessibility! A square size or 1200 x 800 is best for most social media. Square or 4:5 for Instagram.

Question 7

Sharing campaigns in-person

Direct sharing:
• Hand out flyers at a rally, church, library, or social club
• Put QR codes on party/wedding invitations
• Text a groupchat; email family and friends
• Run a fundraising drive with parents at your kids' school through WhatsApp
• Pass a motion with your union to give

Community-building:
• Host a special meal: ask people to chip in a small amount and give that individually or together afterwards. Talk about Gaza.
• Have an autonomous zone, student space, leftist hangout and maybe a restaurant who can donate some catering? Make it for the community.
• Do a monthly pooled donation with friends.

Post flyers at:
• libraries
• club meeting spaces
• a local business, such as a restaurant (talk to them first)

Question 8

Sharing campaigns online

Option 1:
• Sign up to Buffer
• Queue daily posts on social accounts (max 3)
• Make sure the queue is spaced out. You want timezone spread, consistency, & not to annoy people
• Click “duplicate” and adjust a couple words to save time writing new ones from scratch. I do this on an 8-day cadence. So I grab the post from 8 days ago, duplicate it, adjust. Saves retyping alt text, too.
• The tag system, pre-loaded hashtags, & calendar view are super handy
• Add a short goal - you'll have to edit scheduled posts as progress changes

Option 2:
• Pick a short goal (see "Tracking short goals")
• Write down the starting amount on the campaign, the goal, and the progress (like 0/120)
• Pick a deadline (I like 3 days)
• Make a post: need, goal, deadline
• Update progress in-thread once or twice a day

Selling goods

• Sell at protest stalls, fairs, benefits. Here are some examples: zines, used books, printed open-source literature (e.g., essays), wildflower seeds, donated art, handmade crafts, greeting cards, baked goods. You can find a lot of revolutionary texts or other public domain books & essays on the Internet Archive. Some collectives have made printable zines, so you don't have to make anything new.

• Run an auction or raffle with donated goods

Hosting an event (in-person or online)

Accepted Answer

• Host an event online or in-person and ask for donation receipts instead of payment.

• Real examples: Public lecture. Speaker panel. Book club. Writing workshop. Poetry reading. Digital recital. Listening party for a band. Skillshare, like teaching a language, embroidery, or how to repair cars. Steaming a video game and linking each level cleared to an amount donated.

• Make a Jotform (allows anonymous uploads, unlike Google) and ask people to upload donation receipts to receive a ticket or the zoom link. OR ask them to send it to your PayPal/Venmo/etc. for you to donate at the end as a single donation.

Tracking short goals

• Short goals make sure that a family gets consistent help. Make it small and set a deadline. 350 in four days is my golden amount.

• Make a fundraising note

• Hit space to input sum it calculates [=0]
• Type “ /350” after it (or whatever your short goal is)
• Update the first number and it now auto-tracks your short goal for your posts.

Finding new ideas

• Browse accounts of campaigners on different socials apps. What are things that they do? Do they leverage linktrees towards a particular benefit? What creative things are they doing? How do they convey & keep track of goals? What resources do they offer? Reimagine for your use.

• Stop before asking someone to do something for you. Assess why you need to reach out. What gap do you have? Is it time? Is it disability that affects your vision, or your use of tech? Is it that you’re scared (valid)? Is it that you don’t know what’s next? Is it a limit of your knowledge or experience? Have you given your best before asking for someone else's? Sometimes advice is the ask you really need.

• This isn’t just about giving. It’s about campaigning, community, and centering the dignity of people surviving annihilation.

• When talking about recurring donations, think about bite-sized pledges: $5 a week helps a kid to study, a baby to get diapers, someone to buy monthly medication. The biggest issue in direct aid is consistency.
