The splits in the gills of Schizophyllum commune close over the fertile surfaces as the fruitbody shrivels during prolonged dry weather, rehydrating when moistened by rain; then the splits reopen, the spore-producing surfaces are exposed to the air, and spores are released. Split Gills can survive several such cycles of dehydration and rehydration, a facility that enables these fungi to live on every continent on earth.
Often seen on sickly hardwood trees, but equally common on dead wood including cut timber, the Split Gill fungus usually grows as a sessile bracket.

"Splitgill Mushroom" Schizophyllum Commune 

This nearly fluorescent, candy pink fungus species has been discovered in New Caledonia. Its fruiting bodies are also very unusual in their architecture, producing up to half-a-dozen caps diminishing in size from bottom to top, all emanating from a central stem that can reach 10cm in height. The "Barbie pagoda" fungus is an ectomycorrhizal symbiont forming sheaths around the roots of the oak gum, Arillastrum gummiferum. 
No closely related fungus species are known to be toxic, but the cotton-like fibrous structure and smell of radishes probably rule this out as an object of culinary attention.

"Barbie Pagoda" Podoserpula Miranda 

This awesome stinkhorn appears in tropical and subtropical areas. In the United States it is common in Hawaii and in the southeastern states, where it has apparently been introduced. It features a central column that is topped by an array of short, doubled tentacles. The central portion of the crown is initially covered with a foul-smelling brown spore slime that attracts flies and other insects, who then disperse the mushroom's spores elsewhere.

"Anenome Stinkhorn" Aseroe Rubra 

This mushroom goes by many names—lion's mane, bearded tooth, hedgehog, bearded hedgehog, Satyr's beard, or pom pom mushroom—and is known for its strange, stringy appearance. The "strings" are actually spines that grow from a single point on the mushroom and cascade down like the yarn of a mop head. Lion's mane mushrooms are usually white in color and round in shape. They're technically tooth fungi that can be found on hardwood trees throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. These mushrooms are supremely choice, having a most delicious, crab-like flavor, and also has been studied for its neurogenic properties. 

"Lion's Mane" Hericium Erinaceus 

This bioluminescent mushroom is found in subtropical Asia, Australia, and Brazil. The caps and stems emit a glowing green light in the dark. They glow brightest when they are about a day old and the surrounding temperature is about 81 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's been theorized that this type of fungus has evolved bioluminescence to attract insects to spread its spores throughout its environment. This super cool species is incredibly fascinating and is currently undergoing study to determine the biological cause for its bright green luminosity. 

"Foxfire" Mycena Singeri

Another common name for this parasitic bracket is the Ox Tongue fungus. Oak timber that has been infected with this parasite is greatly valued by wood turners and cabinet makers, who sometimes refer to it as 'Brown Oak'. If you cut through the flesh of Fistulina hepatica, the Beefsteak Fungus, it certainly does look like a slice of prime beef; unfortunately the taste is not as good as the appearance. Young specimens are rather more palatable, and are best simmered slowly to soften the flesh.

The flavor is where things are supposed to get interesting. They’re a mushroom often eaten raw, supposedly with a sour flavor like sorrels. In a world where 99% of mushroom dishes are made with the same, bland cultivated mushroom cooked with cream or made into stroganoff, the beefsteak holds a place that’s pretty unique.
