🚨 Community Update: Safeway at Hechinger Mall

We were just informed that the Safeway at Hechinger Mall is expected to close on May 16.

Here’s what we know so far:
• Employees have been notified
• The pharmacy may close as soon as April 1
• We are currently working with the city to better understand what this means for the community

We also know the DC Streetcar is scheduled to close March 31, so these changes may create additional strain for some neighbors.

We wanted to share this update as soon as possible so residents can begin planning ahead.

We are actively seeking more information and will share updates as we receive them. In the meantime, please share any concerns you have so we can raise them as we work with the city.

DPR hosted the construction kickoff meeting for the park at 19th & L St NE.

💰 Budget: $429,665
Features include a nature-themed playground, community garden planters, seating, bike racks, lighting, and more based on community input.

🚧 Construction: Summer–Fall 2026
⚠️ Parking: 19th St in front of the park may be temporarily unavailable at the start of construction for utility work.

Construction Timeline
Construction is expected to start in late summer and wrap up by fall 2026.

Community Engagement
A community meeting is planned for February/March, with details shared closer to the date.

Funding Update 💰
On February 3, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced $500,000 in Community Project Funding for Carver-Langston Park upgrades under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026. Updated project materials also indicate potential for additional funding that could expand project improvements.

Current Status of the project as of November 18, 2025?

DPR held its quarterly update on 11/18/2025, and it appears the project timeline has been pushed slightly. The major takeaway: there will be an in-person meeting on the Carver Langston Park project before January 1st. No date yet — stay tuned.

During the February 10, 2025 DC Department of Parks and Recreation meeting, we received an update on the Carver-Langston Park project! The planning is still in the very early stages, and there will be more updates in late Spring 2025.

🔹 Last year, a walkthrough was held.
🔹 DPR is working to hire planners.
🔹 Community re-engagement will begin in late Spring 2025.
