Rethinking the Greek Campaign to Repatriate the Parthenon Marbles | Amsterdam University Press
Rethinking the Greek Campaign to Repatriate the Parthenon Marbles | Amsterdam University Press
Offering an incisive examination into aspects of the controversy regarding ownership of the marble sculptures infamously removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the early nineteenth century, this volume challenges long-held scholarly assumptions frequently made in support of the return of the artworks to Athens. With the fate of the Parthenon’s marbles thrust into the spotlight of international media attention over recent years as high-level talks have been underway in an effort to resolve the long-running dispute, this timely book exposes some of the historical inaccuracies and misleading information frequently passed off to academics, students and the general public in an effort to bolster support for the repatriation of the marbles to Greece. It is a volume that offers a fresh perspective on what has long been regarded as the touchstone case for disputes concerning contested cultural heritage.
The Obsolescence of Human Rights | Amsterdam University Press
The Obsolescence of Human Rights | Amsterdam University Press
This book explores how the alt-right has appropriated human rights rhetoric – once rooted in progressive ideals – to resist public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Phrases like “My body, my choice” have been retooled to challenge vaccination and state intervention. The author interrogates the historical and ideological malleability of human rights, revealing how their universalist claims are often compromised by exclusionary and reactionary forces. Central to this analysis is the pandemic’s role in exposing science as an emerging political cleavage. Through the lens of political mistrust, pseudoscience, conspiracy thinking, and neoliberal crisis, the book examines the conditions that gave rise to right-wing human rights discourse – and asks whether the concept of rights can still hold emancipatory promise in an era of ecological breakdown and rising technopolitical conflicts.

Suffragettes in the Land of the Tsars | Amsterdam University Press
During Russia revolutionary year of 1917, Emmeline Pankhurst and her secretary Jessie Kenney, both well-known suffragettes, traveled to the beleaguered country to talk with Russian women about suffrage, but also to persuade Russia to remain in the war. While there, Pankhurst and Kenney met many leading figures in Russia: Felix Yusupov, the ringleader in the murder of Grigorii Rasputin; members of the Provisional Government, including its president, Alexander Kerensky; and Maria Bochkareva, the commander of the Women’s Death Battalion. They spoke with officials from the YMCA and the Red Cross and gave talks to small groups of women in private homes. Throughout, Kenney kept a diary, which she later turned into a manuscript, “The Price of Liberty.” This volume introduces Kenney’s Russian diary to a general audience, offering a new perspective on the Russian Revolution and facilitating awareness of this unique episode in the story of the British suffrage movement.

Klaverjas and the Hidden Sporting Heritage of South Africa | Amsterdam University Press
As a collective, klaverjas players form a distinct community of practice with a unique organisational discourse, language, and set of socialisation practices. Given its prevalence within South Africa’s Black communities, klawerjas, as it is locally known, is perceived as both the traditional game of the communities in question and a marker of a particular regional ethnic identity. The history of klaverjas is part of the unmapped sporting heritage of South Africa’s Black communities, whose true extent and meaning have long remained obscured. This book maps the development of klaverjas, its consolidation, its unique local character, and its intersections with broader societal events. It places competitive klaverjas in the mainstream of South Africa’s sports history and claims its place as a part of the country’s national sports identity.

Refugees and Citizens in Twentieth-Century East Central Europe | Amsterdam University Press
Refugees and Citizens in Twentieth-Century East Central Europe | Amsterdam University Press
Visited by violence and wars, border changes and political instability, authoritarian and totalitarian regimes as well as ethnic conflict, cleansing, and genocide, East-Central Europe in the twentieth century seemed an unlikely place of protection for refugees. This volume challenges this widespread view and explores a variety of forms of refugee protection, humanitarianism, and refugee agency in settings beyond the perceived stability of “Western” liberal democracies. Analyzing Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Yugoslavia over the twentieth century, the contributors provide a multi-faceted picture of refugee reception and aid, or its absence, across very different political regimes.

Commemorating Defeat | Amsterdam University Press
Commemorating Defeat | Amsterdam University Press
This book provides a ground-breaking study of monuments to defeat. Focusing on one sculpture—Gloria Victis, or Glory to the Defeated, by French artist Antonin Mercié—the author examines the artwork’s profound influence on commemorative practices at the turn of the twentieth century. Using case studies spanning Europe, Africa, and North and South America, the research examples given in this book highlights an international trend for erecting public monuments celebrating military defeats. The analysis of the role of public sculpture in shaping collective memory from the standpoint of history’s losers rather than victors reveals surprising connections between defeat and power. Weaving together histories of failed revolutions, foreign conquests, and toppled governments, this book creates a thoughtful analysis of the political manipulation of fact and memory which is just as relevant for the present as it is for the past.

This edited volume focuses on the effects that Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine had on Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). It includes chapters covering fourteen countries situated in different corners of the broader region. Individual contributions shed light on how these CEE countries positioned themselves vis-à-vis the war and (re)defined their own regional identities and geopolitical belonging. The chapters offer a rich survey of the local discourses and perspectives, grasping the region in its persisting complexity and diversity.
