The Second List (Before the Rain)Camila VogelPaperbackSang has never lied to Yun. Not once in twenty years. He has simply been deciding, quietly and in advance, which of the true things she is allowed to have. Na Yun and Shin Sang-hoon met when they were thirteen. They have worked at the same Seoul firm for ten years — he a senior partner, she an associate on partner track, eleven meters and one impossible rule apart. Neither of them has ever said the thing out loud, because saying it would cost her a career she has earned twice over. Then, at half past midnight on the twenty-seventh floor, hours out from a nine o'clock mediation, Yun builds a settlement agreement out of a document she should never have opened. By morning there is a page on the carpet with the wrong client's name stamped across it — and a woman in the paralegal pool who found it first. A woman who has wanted one thing for two years, and whom nobody has ever thought to ask. The firm's annual disclosure is due Friday. There is a line on the form for personal relationships with a colleague. And in a drawer, there are four pages written by Sang. Numbered. Twenty years of small decisions made on her behalf by a man who was certain he was protecting her. Every entry is true. He wrote them down so that one day she could read them. That is not the same as telling her. THE SECOND LIST is a slow-burn contemporary romance about friends who became colleagues, colleagues who became something neither of them will name, and the particular unkindness of being loved by a person who has already decided what you can carry. For readers who love workplace romance, friends to lovers, forced proximity, unbearable restraint, and a hero with a great deal to answer for. Includes glossaries of the Korean and legal terms — though nothing in the novel is withheld from a reader who skips them.
