Weight Neutral Health Providers 

We invite you to participate in a research study exploring how everyday experiences influence the health and well-being of sexual minority women. We are especially interested in understanding how experiences such as discrimination, minority stress, and weight stigma may relate to body image, health behaviors, and overall well-being in daily life.

While traditional healthcare has often focused on body weight as a measure of health, research increasingly shows that social experiences, stress, access to care, and other factors also shape health. Through this study, we hope to better understand these influences in real time and contribute to more equitable, person-centered approaches to health and healthcare for people of all body sizes.

Participation is completely voluntary. You may choose not to participate or stop participating at any time without penalty.

Purpose of this Study

After completing the Sign Up form, our research team will review your responses to determine whether you are eligible for the study. If you are eligible, you’ll attend a 30-minute Zoom orientation where we’ll explain the study, help you set up your Fitbit, and answer any questions. Over the next 14 days, you’ll wear the Fitbit day and night (removing it only when needed) and complete 4–5 brief smartphone surveys each day (about 2–3 minutes each). 

On three randomly selected days, you’ll also complete a brief 24-hour dietary recall about your food and beverage intake. Each evening, you’ll complete a short end-of-day survey with the option to share any stressful or stigmatizing experiences through a typed response or voice memo. Our research team will check in periodically to answer questions and support you throughout the study.

What Will You Be Doing?

Led by Dr. Lauren Fowler at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, our team brings together graduate and undergraduate researchers who are passionate about health equity. As members of the LGBTQIA+ community, we are committed to conducting research that is inclusive, community-centered, and grounded in lived experiences. 

Our work explores how weight stigma, discrimination, and intersecting identities shape health and well-being, with the goal of advancing more equitable public health research and practice.

Our Team

As a thank-you for your time, participants can earn up to $290 for completing study activities and will be able to keep the Fitbit provided by the research team upon completing the study.

While you may not experience direct personal benefits, some participants find that taking part in the study increases their awareness of their daily experiences, health behaviors, and responses to stress.

Your participation will also help advance LGBTQIA+ health research by improving our understanding of how minority stress, weight stigma, and other forms of discrimination influence health and well-being. Findings from this study may help inform more equitable, community-centered research, healthcare, and public health approaches.
