Growing up in a small rural town, with no physical links to my hapū or marae, knowing how to navigate being Māori was blurred by social norms.

In the late 80s, early 90s, I attached myself to the political struggles expressed by hip hop coming out of the states, groups like Public Enemy, Arrested Development, NWA, KRS-One, Grandmaster Flash etc.

But when I heard, 'Behold My Kool Style' from Dam Native things changed. They expressed what I was thinking as Māori.

The focus was, 'kaupapa driven rhymes uplifted.'

These focuses are no different with Māori in the education sector, from 'whānau transformation through education,' to 'he uri whai mana motuhake.'

For me, it's about being kaupapa driven. Being apart of something that is greater than oneself with an opportunity to serve others and hopefully uplift...

The Why

Hip hop is a culture that was born out of oppression, discrimination and injustices.

It has gone from being hated on, to being played in cafes.

Hip hop is a form of expression that pushes boundaries.

Regardless of what many say, it has, and will always be, about "elevating the art-form."

My whānau is a source of motivation "to" mahi.

But... Hip hop reminds me to elevate my mahi.
Learn. Adapt. Refine. Reflect. Repeat.

Today, technology has provided a platform for hip hop to reach a wider audience with many elevating the art-form in their own way...

In a parallel way, Hip Hop has inspired and shaped me to elevate what I do in my mahi to push boundaries.
