I present your 6-week meal plan with recipes and shopping lists to help you implement the way of eating that was critical to my own weight loss, a meal plan approach that I call "The Ridiculously Big Salad." It is a one-meal-a-day ketogenic meal plan that was a game-changer for me in my decades-struggle with weight loss. I am "half my size," down to 140 pounds from 280 due to this eating framework. I am proud to say that many other very excited older women are following in my path, changing our lives completely. When I started the Eat Like A Bear! group in July of 2018, I had little self-awareness that I had a distinct model of eating to lose the 140 pounds. I tell people I eat keto foods and use intermittent fasting. That is indeed the case, but there are many possible models of implementing keto and intermittent fasting. In fact, there is a lot of confusion and many misconceptions in the world of ketogenic dieting that The Ridiculously Big Salad cuts right through. Distinct in the Low Carb / Keto Diet World It turns out that what I ate all of those months really followed a distinct and highly-replicable model, with elements we probably should not dismiss or take for granted, especially as people implement variations of this concept with a little less success. In fact, what made me realize The Ridiculously Big Salad might have been a key tool for me is noticing two things: The people joining the Eat Like A Bear! group in Facebook in 2018 having the most success were those eating The Ridiculously Big Salad. Some people’s implementation of The Ridiculously Big Salad did not fit what I considered to be my model of The Ridiculously Big Salad and they seemed to have less success. (Some might eat a lot of protein on top of a few green leaves, for instance.) These observations sent me to my kitchen for about 8 weeks, pondering the details of The Ridiculously Big Salad framework. If you know my story, you know that when I started my dive into this weight loss, I had no real plan. I started with an extended water fast and then began eating "one meal a day." I decided that if I was only going to eat once, I would eat a whole lot of bulk with fewer calories and so I bulked up on salad greens. I added calories via homemade salad dressings and protein toppers. As I was deconstructing my salad-making this past spring for this book, I discovered that, with no real planning, my salads predictably had about 500 calories tied up in salad dressing, made with a healthy fat. The salads have a predictably giant bed of salad greens. The have a healthy protein on top. I ate this "meal type" about 80% of the time in my most intensive phases of weight loss. In maintenance, I eat The Ridiculously Big Salad just about as often, though I do often add another item or two to my daily eating. In any case, I continue to rely on The Ridiculously Big Salad. I feel better when I am eating it and miss it when I haven't had it for a couple of days. The "Ridiculously Big Salad" Makes the News! When I was on NBC news affiliate KGET, news anchor Maddie Jannsen was pretty amazed by the ridiculously big size of the bowl I use to eat The Ridiculously Big Salad. The Ridiculously Big Salad Nearly Broke the U.S. Post Office For our first batch of 10,000 books we actually had to fulfill the orders out of our own house. We were lucky to have property big enough to house eleven pallets of books, but we are so remote that we absolutely busted the seams of the tiny little post office. Our main limiting factor was sourcing thousands of priority mail envelopes during a postal supply shortage. (A team of rural postmasters banded together to help us with that.) The secondary factor was what we call "Angela's car." Angela is the rural mail carrier who somehow fit 220 books a day in the compact car you see in the photo below. Sandy the retired postmaster is now completely retired, but famous in this little postal region among the rural postal network. Angela keeps hauling mail. The Ridiculously Big Salad is its own framework The Ridiculously Big Salad has an actual, specific framework, a key point that blew my mind since I was really just flying blind all of those months, grinding out the weight loss from 2017 into 2018. I had no intention whatsoever to be here in 2020 writing a book about it all, or leading a mini-revolution among the women on Facebook and YouTube. Heck, I just wanted to be able to walk across my house without limping and to hike with my sons in the forest near our home in California's Giant Sequoia National Monument. My desperation was deep and my goals were basic. But what you actually need... All that said, you know my mantra in the Eat Like A Bear! group: You don't need surgery, drugs, or branded products to succeed with this weight loss approach. All you need is your own bootstraps. Reach down and pull yourself up. We have success cases in this community who do not own this book. They have followed me around the internet, taken bits and pieces and have worked it out. As I say in the original e-book on this website, The Bear Bones Blueprint, you do not need this book about The Ridiculously Big Salad. I discuss "The Ridiculously Big Salad" on Facebook regularly, in the Eat Like A Bear! group on Facebook, and anywhere else I happen to be. Fellow moms at my sons' school see me and my actual real-life salads regularly. The salad is no secret. The book has no secrets. I am not going to tell you that there are three hidden secrets in the book that will unlock your weight loss dreams. You don't need me or this book for that because you already have yourself and, it turns out, that is really all you actually need. However, for some months I have gotten feedback that people want more specific details about the salad. From that feedback, I holed up in my kitchen weighing and measuring things like I never do (and hope not to have to do all that often) and realizing, by golly, this salad thing really is an actual framework. I lay the framework out in this book. The cooking strategies could save a huge amount of time and fuss More so, there is a specific way I prepare the salads using very basic bulk cooking strategies, to ensure that I always have a 10-minute salad at my disposal every single day that tastes different from yesterday's salad. EVERY week! WHAT??? LOL Here's That Ridiculous Claim, About Us! (!!!!) Anyone who knows me already knows that I couldn't just say nothing about it... So if you are finding me here today, and you are like me in 2017 – topping the scales at 280 lbs. (and very short at 5'3"), having tried everything and really desperate to be able to get out and live life – then perhaps you have already stopped reading. I get it. I do hope that you're still here, or if you've left, that you'll be back. Well just a few years ago, I’d really had it! A Unique Moment of Psychology and a Movement is Born I was on my couch, barely able to move due to a knee injury, looking out my window at the beautiful forest that I couldn’t explore because I could barely walk. Below is a picture of me laying on the couch in those early days, and one that I re-created years later. I actually want to give a shout-out to my own "before picture," because a pretty unique and important bit of psychology was happening in my brain at that moment, allowing me for the first time in four decades to get where I am now – at my lowest weight as an adult. It's really quite a lengthy and interesting story, one archived across social media, and I could talk about all day, but let me get to the eating part. As I lay on that couch in those early days, I was actually planning to have bariatric surgery in four months (surgery I never had and no longer qualified for). In those months, I promised myself that I would prove to myself that I had done everything I could to lose weight. I began a process of what I call "iterating through meal approaches" – testing eating approaches like a scientist whose life depended on it. (My Ph.D. is in political science, and I had spent decades conducting research on government programs.) What I landed on was a meal framework that leverages the benefits of a low-carb/ketogenic diet AND intermittent fasting. However, within each of these classes of weight loss approaches, what I didn't really appreciate at the time was how distinct, replicable, and effective my meal approach was. Then My Story And My Meal Approach Became Viral My story became viral in Facebook in 2018, and I began to teach people about low-carb eating and intermittent fasting in our very young Eat Like a Bear! community. We had some great success just with those general frameworks because they really are quite effective. However, community members pushed me to teach them exactly what I was eating, and a crazy thing happened: Our community success rate improved. Then community members asked for a book, and a very modest and under-produced book about salads improved our success rate further. The print version of that original little digital book then made national news by nearly breaking the U.S. Post Office. The success of that book has driven much of the massive weight loss success you see in the Eat Like a Bear! community, and our 125+ cases of 100+ pounds lost. But Not Everyone Wants A Salad ... I was coaching a friend on all of this. She said to me frankly: "Sorry, but I'm tired of salads, and I need something else." "Why don't you just eat it cooked?" I responded. She was dumbfounded because, as I mentioned, my own "salad lady" reputation had proceeded me. However, from January 2019, when I launched the Three-Day Challenge in the Eat Like a Bear! community, I taught an approach to cooked meals that followed the exact same eating framework of the salad, but the meals were simply cooked instead of raw. Two-and-a-half years in the making, I offer the new book "Half My Size with Soups, Skillets, and Sautés" in honor of my friends who wanted to eat something other than salads. (You do know that I eat these cooked meals too, right? Though I expect I will forever be "the salad lady.") And so my point is that this book, too, just like the Ridiculously Big Salad, is born out of the social proof of this way of eating, from our Eat Like a Bear! community, a community of mostly women over 50 who have always struggled with their weight. (Already anticipating the question: But what if I am younger and/or have less to lose? Will this still work for me? The older ladies of Eat Like a Bear! jump up and down and say: "Yes! Get started!" ... and some also say, "Do you really think it's harder for you, being young and with less weight to lose? Why are you waiting?" (You do know that our community is comprised mostly of older ladies, right? We welcome everyone around here, but this is just fair warning....) And Yet, Don't Focus on the Recipes ... There are over 60 recipes in this collection and they have driven MASSIVE success. However, our most successful community members are leveraging the benefits of the recipes in a specific psychological context. The whole "not recipe" section of the book -- the psychology of implementation -- is worth far more than the recipes and is an extremely unique and effective approach to weight loss. OK, so how are we getting there, to what is really important? These recipes are a highly-effective way of eating for weight loss. The recipes in the new companion book are ridiculously simple and modeled after the highly-effective recipe featured in Day 2 of the Three-Day Challenge.
