How do I know if I need a mammogram?

Screening guidelines are different depending on your age, history, and body. But, having an annual mammogram is one of the most important steps you can take to detect breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

If you are a woman over age 40, an annual screening mammograms are recommended. Transgender women who have been taking HRT for 5 or more years should start also start annual screening mammograms at age 40.

Most men, in general, do not need screening mammograms.  Transgender men with breast tissue should start annual screenings at age 40. If not, screenings aren’t needed. After top surgery, no screenings are needed.

All men should be aware of the symptoms of male breast cancer and seek medical advice if they notice any changes in their breast tissue.
