Parking:
Parking for Duluth attendees has been offered by Van Meter, located at 4531 W 1st Street.
Carpooling is recommended to reduce the amount of cars.

Bong Bridge Entry:
Access to the bridge on the corner of Michigan Street & 43rd Avenue West.

Parking for Superior attendees has been offered by Quality Inn, located at 1405 Susquehanna Avenue.
Please park at the back of the parking lot to leave the closer spots for hotel guests.
Carpooling is recommended.

Bong Bridge Entry:
Access to the bridge is on Susquehanna Avenue underneath Highway 2.

Superior, Wisconsin

It may be very windy on the bridge, so be sure to wear layers to protect yourself from the sun and wind. Ensure everything is firmly attached or held, to prevent items blowing into the roadway or water.

- Bright clothing
- Sunscreen
- A hat (chin strap recommended due to the wind)
- Layers (it may be windy/cold on the bridge)
- Flags (avoid oversized flags that could interfere with the roadway)
- Signs (ensure they won't blow away)
- Water bottle
- Mask/ear/eye protection (if you may be impacted by vehicles & road debris)


What should I bring?

There will be many people using the walkway (both with us, and others using it for transit), so avoid things that may cause problems, such as:

- anything large that may interfere with vehicles, or prevent people from using the pedestrian path (large flags, giant signs, etc.)
- anything that could blow into the road/water
- bikes/scooters (mobility aids are ok)
- dogs (medical assistance animals are ok)
- weapons of any kind

What should I NOT bring?

Duluth: the pedestrian path starts on West Michigan Street and 43rd Avenue West (near Bernick's)

Superior: the pedestrian path starts on Susquehanna Avenue under the Highway 2 overpass (near the Quality Inn)

DO NOT attempt to access by having a car on the highway drop you off (illegal & dangerous)!

How do I get to the Bong Bridge pedestrian path?

Event Form: Starting Point & Distance

You can chose to stay close to the starting point (less walking), go to the center of the bridge, or some point in between.
Please fill out the Starting Point & Distance form so the organizers can communicate in advance about locations.

Duluth Distances:
- Parking lot to Bridge entry: .5 mi
- Entry up to bridge: .6 mi
- Entry up to halfway point: 1.2 mi

Superior Distances:
- Parking lot to Bridge entry: .01 mi
- Entry up to bridge: .6 mi
- Entry up to halfway point: 1.2 mi

How far do I need to walk?

You can drive on the bridge to show your support by honking and waving. You can also show up to the after party at Earth Rider Brewery.

Can I participate without walking?

If dangerous conditions (lightening, severe thunderstorm, etc.):
- The event will be postponed to June 21st (check this page for updates).

If non-dangerous conditions (rain, wind, etc.):
- The event will continue. We recommend wearing rain gear instead of bringing an umbrella (which could blow away in strong wind).

What if there is bad weather?

Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center

The bridge is named after Richard Ira Bong, a WWII pilot born in Superior.
He was America’s all-time "Ace of Aces", downing 40 enemy planes in the Pacific theater of the war while flying P-38 fighter planes. His many decorations for outstanding skills and extraordinary courage included the Congressional Medal of Honor and every other medal besides the Purple Heart.

Why is it called the "Bong Bridge"?

A cross-state flag day bridge brigade joining Duluth & Superior.

What better place to march for democracy than on a bridge?
Flags, pipes, drums, singing, and pro-democracy signs are invited. Boaters and kayakers can join on the river below.

We will gather at either end of the Bong Bridge pedestrian/bike lane, then meet in the middle for a two-state bridge brigade!

There will be an after-party at Earth Rider Brewing in Superior.

There will be a lot of walking at an incline, with no benches or rest areas to sit. Please ensure you are physically capable of walking to and from the bridge. The bridge is wheelchair accessible - please ensure you can safely use your mobility aids on an incline.
If you are not able to join us walking on the bridge, you can participate by driving by to show your support!

Duluth Distances:

Long Distances at an Incline

Do not bring anything that may interfere with vehicles (extremely large flag/signs, anything that could blow onto the roadway, etc.).

If you are driving, pay attention to the road. Do drive in a manner that could cause an accident (keep eyes on the road, don't stop or slow below traffic speed, etc.).

Do Not Endanger Vehicles

Stay single-file on the South-side of the pedestrian path (furthest from vehicles). Leave room for others to use the bridge, as well as for the safety teams.
If you are brining a sign or flag, ensure you can hold them without blocking the sidewalk.
