What kind of music do you sing?

AVP sings 4-part a cappella close harmony, specializing in the barbershop style but performing a wide range of genres and musical styles. We have a large repertoire of songs for most occasions, including Christmas, romantic, and patriotic music. And of course plenty of fun, upbeat tunes as well as emotional ballads.

Where can I see you perform?

We have large annual concerts, usually in the Spring and at Christmastime, as well as smaller performances throughout the year. Many of our major concerts are held at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, but we love to sing all over metro Atlanta, across the state, and yes, even around the world!

Can I hire you?

We love singing for anyone, anywhere. We can provide entertainment for a variety of functions and time frames and would be happy to work with you on a solution for your entertainment needs! Whether it's an intimate quartet dinner date performance or an impactful corporate conference with our full 50-man chorus, we will make your event unforgettable. Plus, all performance payments are tax-deductible!

Who can join AVP?

Our chorus is open to men of all ages who can pass our audition's performance criteria. Although we are not a professional group, we do maintain high musical standards to deliver a top quality product for our audiences. We perform all music memorized to maximize visual entertainment and occasionally incorporate choreographed movement in some songs. Members are expected to learn music quickly and proficiently, but we provide resources like audio learning tracks and weekly vocal instruction to promote success.
We rehearse Thursdays at 7 PM. Come visit anytime to see if it might be the right fit for your talents!

Is this a paid ensemble?

AVP is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit community arts organization. Our singers are unpaid volunteers, although the chorus does get paid as an organization for performances and accept donations to help further our mission of sharing harmony across Atlanta and beyond.

Many of us within the chorus also form quartets which often get hired separately for paid performances. The chorus can help organize and facilitate those opportunities for our members. We also provide many great member resources including free or cheap arrangements, world class vocal instruction, and exposure to a lot of different audiences and communities.

What is barbershop harmony?

The Barbershop Harmony Society is devoted to promoting, preserving, and enjoying a special form of harmony known as barbershop. But what makes a particular song or arrangement "barbershop-able"? What's the difference between barbershop and doo-wop, jazz, madrigal, and other a cappella music?

Technically speaking, barbershop harmony is a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody. The lead usually sings the melody, with the tenor harmonizing above the lead. The bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone provides in-between notes, either above or below the lead to make chords (specifically, dominant-type or "barbershop" sevenths) that give barbershop its distinctive, "full" sound with ringing overtones.
