What is the Age Requirement?

There really is none. I started Umpiring Travel Softball Tournaments when i was 17. My first ever tournament I walked away with $500! In only 2 days! I started Umpiring D3 NCAA softball when i was just 19! Most girls on the field were actually older then me! For someone that young, this is espcially a great way to make some good money!

I have a job, how flexible is Umpiring?

Tournament dates & NCAA scheduling is released months in advance! So basically, you create your own schedule on when you want to work these events! Travel tournaments are always on Saturdays & Sundays throughout the summer & even fall, with some even starting on Friday or even Thursday! NCAA games are in the Spring, & can be any day of the week, + many D1 Softball series are on Friday/Saturday/Sunday. (2 days) So you can choose to have a very light schdeule with just a few days of umpiring… or work a heavy schedule through the season, summer, & or fall!

Travel

Getting into the world of travel softball and or even NCAA softball, you realize it is a very big country with alot of people, but it can be a small world. For either option, you have a choice on whether or not you prefer to stay within your area, or travel outside of your area. Personally, I’ve traveled the country, both via driving and flying, & it is fun & AWESOME experience. The Colleagues, Friends, and Mentors that you will meet along the way are truly life changing!

Hotels

When you Travel for Softball Tournaments, 99% of the time the organization will comp you a free Hotel room for you & another Umpire thats working. (Unless you live close by) And for NCAA, D1 Conferences are the only division that may comp a Hotel room. A D1 Series is (9/10 times) played over 2 days. Some conferences will comp a Hotel room for one night, some will pay a travel stipent to account for any potential hotel rooms you’d need to buy, & some you’re just on your own. (Depending on the organization or conference, along with your mileage to the field, will determine whether or not you could potentially get a travel stipend & even additional nights prior or after the event.

That genuinely does not matter. Sure it helps a little if you’ve ever played baseball or softball… but just remember that I personally started officiating at 17 years old, and walked out with $500+ dollars my first tournament (2 days)

I Umpire Baseball

Firstly, you’re crazy! Just kidding….kind of. Lol. Once upon a Time, I used to do recreatinal baseball as well. But I stopped the day I looked at two softball umpires finish a doubleheader, & I was still in the 5/6th inning. Not to mention, they made almost DOUBLE of what I made. But even, if you’re at a tournament where the baseball games are the same time limit as the softball games, a softball game is just so much quicker and way less boring! This is mainly because of the field, being smaller, and the pitching distance being closer. For NCAA, baseball and softball, softball is by default going to take far less time, so NCAA pays slightly more. But still more boring, nonetheless, in my opinion. if you do baseball, I get it. Some people are just hard-core baseball guys, but just trust me.

Travel Ball Softball Tournaments (Fastpitch)

The answer might suprise you, & to this day… it shocks me that more young people don’t get into Umpiring Softball like I did! Travel-Ball Softball (or Fastpitch) Tournaments pay anyhwere from $50-$75/game. (80-90 minute Time Limits) Each day you’d work anywhere from 5-8 games the first day, & 4-6 games the last day. At just 11 games @ $65 each, thats $700+ a weekend! And I’d say this is the average, some tournaments you can eaisly make a near $1000+ in just a few days!

NCAA Softball Umpiring (JUCO, NAIA, & D3+D2)

Once you’ve become a quality Umpire, you may want to look into Umpiring NCAA Softball Games! The games become better quality, more competitive, & the pay isn’t that bad!  When starting, you would Umpire Junior Colleges (Community Colleges, or JUCO), NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic), NCAA Division 3, & possibly even D2. Schools in these categories play 2 games back to back (DoubleHeader) & usually take about 1.75-2.5hours to complete. Umpires are paid roughly $200-$250 for both games

NCAA Softball Umpiring (Division 1)

Once you have worked hard to become a great Collegiate Umpire, you should consider Umpiring at the Division 1 Level! The quality of ball is higher, so of course Umpires need be at a high level as well! Divison 1 Conferences can really be split up into 4 levels, & can be rated low to high when factoring in a Team/Players’ winning capability, & also differentiate by what they pay Umpires per Series/DH.  -1. Low Major: Roughly $200+/game. -2. Low Major: + Good Pay & Travel: Roughly $200+/Game + Roughly $300+ Travel + Roughly $50/Day Per diem. -3. Mid Major: Same as Low Major -2., but better quality ball & slightly better pay. -4. High Major: [Power Conference] Roughly $350+/Game + Great Travel & Per Diem

For Travel Softball Tournaments, by the end of summer, you can make between $5000-$10,000+ only working weekends! (May, June, July) For NCAA, by the end of spring, you can make between $4000-$10,000+ (in 2 Months)  [D1: $750-$1000-$1500-$2000+ PER 2-Day D1 Series] [$30k-$45k if working D1 High Major]

The #1 thing you’ll recieve, is 1 on 1 training to make you better. This involves training over the phone, but in person (if possible) as well. Also included, is an infinite amount of in-depth Game Film review as well. You’ll be an ENTIRLEY different Umpire in a matter of WEEKS!

As of now, Training is strictly 1 on 1. There are no group settings, where multiple members will be trained together at one time. The most you’ll interact with is perhaps a 3 way call.  [We believe in a more Isolated format of training]

Now, Im no World Series Umpire, but I’d like to think I’ve learned a thing or 2 over the years. Im going on about 10 years of Umpiring Competitive Softball, and about 7 years of NCAA Softball. Including 3 years at the D1 level. I’ve been all around the country perfecting our craft, along with attending a few camps. And though I have a long way to go for my own personal goals, I love giving back & helping other Umpires, just as I was helped along the way!

Camps vs Clinics

Firstly, it’s important to know the difference between “Camps” & “Clinics”. Attending a “Camp”, means you are showcasing your skills & trying to get hired onto an Assignor/Cordinator’s Roster for the next season. When you attend a “Clinic”, you should be attending for the purposes of learning & improving your craft. (NOTE: First inpressions are very important, so wouldn’t you like to be at your absolute very best before being in front of someone very important?) If there are very important assignors there, i would call that a Camp.

When should I go to either one?

Utlizing ULT, should make it so you dont have to attend any Clinics. But once you’ve ethier been evaluated at a clinic, by an umpire @ the D1 level, & or an Umpire that specializes in evaluating… and they have  1-2 things or less for you to fix, each game they watch you Umpire, you know you’re ready to attend a Camp.

Improve outside of Camps & Season Games

The two main ways an average Umpire gets better is by -1. Working during the NCAA Season, and hopefully realizing mistakes/situations where you messed up & correcting them in future games. -2. Camps…. Umpire’s attend camps, learn some things but aren’t good enough so they dont get hired, & attend the next camp down the road to try again… Rinse & Repeat. ULT will unlock for you the 2 other ways, to which will allow you to become the 1% of Umpires!

With ULT, we were able to take a 2 year NCAA Umpire, (1st Year Divison 1), & he/she was able to recieve a Conference Championship where he/she was PU for the Championship Game + receive a full Division 1 schedule (His/Her 2nd year D1) the following season, ranging mutlple conferences & assignors where he/she is paid in one conference alone, almost $1500 for 1 series.

1 on 1 Training consists of an infinite amount of Training over the Phone, where we’ll explore all aspects of the game. Every little thing we do is for a reason. You will be more knowledgeable about our game then ever before, learning things you cant find in any book. It also includes intense, on the field Training/Evaluations. This will involve 2-Person & 3 Person Mechanics. In a matter of WEEKS, you will be a High Level, Top Tier, D1 Umpire.
