I use real wood and plants. This helps mimic their natural habitat. It’s important to make sure that the decor is not sharp as it can tear fins.

What substrate can I use?

I personally like fluval stratum as it helps with the growth of my plants. You can use also use gravel or sand. The most important thing is that it is not painted gravel. The rainbow or color gravel you see at typical pet stores, is toxic to the fish and can leak into the water.

I personally like looking at local fish stores. Big box stores like PetSmart or PetCo have a horrible track record with sick fish, if possible its best to stay away from them. Some online retailers I recommend is PNW Bettas and Prism Bettas.
