Notes from the Winery/Importer100% Cabernet Franc from a young south-west vineyard of Cabernet Franc in Brézé, in the lieu-dit La Ripaille. The soil profile is predominantly sandy-clay of 1.5m in depth. Brendan is just the second grower with La Ripaille. (The other is Antoine Foucault of Domaine du Collier.) Harvest is sorted in the vineyard then destemmed 100% upon arrival at Brendan’s facility. Maceration is based on an infusion style, no extraction (no pump-overs, pigeage, delestage) and lasts 6 days in order to preserve delicate and purity in texture. Aging is also in stainless steel for 6 months. 2018 is the first vintage bottled. Notes on the Producer"We met fellow ex-pat and wine geek, Brendan Stater-West, where magic happens – in Romain Guiberteau’s cellar in Saint-Just-sur-Dive. Since 2011, Brendan has been working behind the scenes as Romain’s right-hand-man. And in 2015, he completed the first harvest of wine to be bottled under his own label, from the wonderfully unique site of Les Chapaudaises! Brendan’s personal story and background in wine (in his own words)… “I arrived in France 10 years ago, originally to be an English teacher in Paris. In my second year of teaching, I became hooked on wine, thanks to a coworker of mine. Fortunately, it was someone who had a good palate and took me to several professional wine tastings. This sparked the flame for my love of wine that has not yet died out! I then decided to stop teaching in order to learn wine and enter the profession. I went to a school in Paris to learn the trade, more on the retail side of things. I worked in a small and beautiful store, Spring, in the 1st arrondissement for an American chef, Daniel Rose, who has an amazing gastronomic restaurant. During this period, we were selling the wines from Domaine Guiberteau. I remember tasting the wines for the first time and immediately being hit by a divine revelation of limestone terroir, through Chenin! I was hooked... thanks to Brézé 2008! I already knew that retail wasn't for me in the long-haul, so after tasting this wine, I felt like it was time to make the move out of the city and get back into a more rural context where I could learn to grow grapes and vinify. I therefore harassed Romain Guiberteau and other winemakers in the area for a month, when finally, Romain gave in and accepted to take me under his wing as an apprentice. I enrolled in a BTS Viti-Oeno program and worked full-time at the domaine. My only time working outside the domaine was for a short 3 months where I went to the Clos Cristal, the hospices de Saumur, to learn how to work exclusively in the vineyard with horses. This is a future project of mine by the way... In 2015, I insisted that I wanted to find some vineyards to start making my own wine. Romain proposed one hectare of a vineyard called Les Chapaudaises to me, and I knew it was a terroir that could make the style of Chenin that I am crazy for: elegant, pure, vertical, with salinity from the limestone. What a wonderful vintage to begin with as well! Beautiful ripeness and satisfactory yields after a very easy growing season.” -Wasserman Imports - Location: Bizay, Loire Valley - Variety: Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc - Viticulture: Sustainable, organic methods - Vinification: Light decanting of lees, ambient yeast fermentation and aging for around 18 months in used barrels, some filtration, low doses of SO2 are added at pressing (~20 ppm), after alcoholic fermentation (to help prevent malo, ~10 ppm), with a final adjustment at bottling, approx. 25-60 ppm total SO2 at bottling. Grapes & StyleCabernet FrancCabernet Franc is an old Bordeaux and Loire red grape, and one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon. In Bordeaux it’s often part of a blend, bringing lift, perfume, and freshness; in the Loire, especially Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur-Champigny, and Anjou, it stands on its own as one of the great medium-bodied red wines of France.In the vineyard, Cabernet Franc ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon, which helps it succeed in cooler regions. It still needs enough warmth to avoid hard green flavors, but when farmed well it can keep freshness while developing real aromatic complexity. It often works beautifully on limestone, gravel, and sandy soils, with style shifting depending on site.In the glass, Cabernet Franc usually sits in a lovely middle zone: red and black fruit, fresh herbs, violet, graphite, pepper, and sometimes a subtle leafy edge. It can be light and crunchy or deeper and more structured, but it rarely needs heaviness to make its point. We like it for the way it combines freshness, savory detail, and quiet confidence.

It has a long history in eastern France, especially Burgundy and Champagne, and DNA work shows it as part of the same broad Pinot and Gouais Blanc family that gave us grapes like Gamay and Aligoté. It’s adaptable, easy enough to grow in many places, and capable of producing everything from simple everyday whites to some of the most ageworthy white wines in the world.In the vineyard, Chardonnay buds and ripens relatively early, which makes it useful in cooler climates but vulnerable to spring frost. It tends to do especially well on limestone and calcareous clay, and its relatively neutral fruit profile gives site and cellar choices a lot of room to show. Malolactic fermentation, lees aging, barrel fermentation, and oak can all shape the final wine dramatically.In the glass, Chardonnay can be lean, saline, and citrus-driven, or broad, textured, and orchard-fruited, depending on where it’s grown and how it’s made. Chablis shows the steely, high-acid side; the Côte de Beaune shows depth, texture, and savory complexity; Champagne shows its value as a sparkling-wine base. Good Chardonnay is less about one fixed flavor than about balance, texture, and the way it carries place.

Source line: 2023 Moraza 'San Vicente de la Sonsierra' RiojaNotes on the ProducerBodegas Moraza is in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the first villages in Rioja Alta to be known exclusively for the high quality of the wines made within its medieval settings. The village name means literally under the mountains, and indeed everywhere you look the towering mountains of Tolono - a part of the Sierra Cantabria - dominate the horizon. The small town stands left of the Ebro, the river that crosses the vast Rioja region, and it is here, surrounded by vineyards, that the Moraza family built its winery six generations ago. The family has been growing grapes and making wines since their beginning, and today it is run by the charismatic winemaker Janire Moraza. Janire started getting involved in the late 2000s and her first vintage was 2013. With the help of her husband, Patricio Brongo, she formalized many of the ideas and practices that the family already applied to their farming - working without herbicides and chemicals, following a lunar cycle for pruning and racking - and started the process of biodynamic certification (the vineyards had been certified organic since 2006.) She tells us that when she started talking about biodynamics to her father, he told her that they were already using many of the principles. She improved on those and started making the 500 and 501 preparations to treat the vineyards, and a lot of work became focused on soils. Today all of their 23 hectares have organic and biodynamic certifications. The majority of the parcels is found in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, but a couple are closer to Abalos, and Pecina, a little further along and north from the river. There is also one plot in La Bastid.In the cellar the work is minimal, and slightly atypical for Rioja in that none of the wines are made or staged in oak. As they make clear "our winery was completely built in concrete in 1983 according to the wine-making principles that prevailed in our ancestral house. It has been designed to work with gravity over three floors, so we can avoid over pumping and unnecessary manipulation. Loyal towards our philosophy of letting the fruit fully express itself, fermentation takes place spontaneously in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts." The focus on purity of fruit is evident on all wines, which are bright and fresh on the palate, and enhance the character of each varietal. They work mostly with Viura for their whites and skin contact wine, but also make a Tempranillo Blanco and cultivate and use other native whites such as Calagrano. The reds are made of Tempranillo and are sometimes blended with Garnacha, and Graciano, which also shine singularly with a couple of monovarietal bottlings.Grapes & StyleTempranilloTempranillo is Spain’s central red grape, best known in Rioja and Ribera del Duero but grown across much of the country under a range of local names. Its name points to its relatively early ripening, and its identity is tied to wines that can balance red fruit, earth, structure, and oak-aged complexity.In the vineyard, Tempranillo likes enough warmth to ripen fully but benefits from altitude or diurnal shift to preserve freshness. It can make young, juicy wines, but it’s also one of Europe’s great grapes for aging, especially when paired with thoughtful oak and careful élevage.In the glass, Tempranillo often shows red cherry, plum, dried strawberry, tobacco, leather, dill, spice, and earthy notes. The best examples have a calm, savory depth: not always flashy, but balanced, food-friendly, and capable of developing beautifully over time.

It’s usually lighter in color than its flavor suggests, with moderate tannin and plenty of charm. The best versions balance ripeness with freshness, showing warmth without becoming heavy.SyrahSyrah is a northern Rhône grape with a serious range, capable of making dark, structured, savory reds without needing the sheer weight of Cabernet. Its home is places like Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Joseph, but it has traveled widely, especially to Australia, California, South Africa, and parts of the Mediterranean.In the vineyard, Syrah tends to like warmth, but not excessive heat. In cooler sites it can be peppery, floral, and lifted; in warmer places it becomes darker, richer, and more generous. It has relatively small berries and can produce wines with deep color, good tannin, and a strong savory profile.In the glass, Syrah often shows black fruit, violet, black pepper, olive, smoke, meat, and spice. The best examples have density without feeling clumsy — dark-fruited and structured, but still aromatic and full of detail. We tend to love Syrah when it keeps that savory edge and doesn’t lose its freshness.

Because it can crop heavily, quality depends on thoughtful farming and restraint. It has also been important historically as a table grape and as a parent of Pinotage, the South African cross with Pinot Noir.In the glass, Cinsault tends to be pale, fragrant, and easy on its feet, with red fruit, flowers, spice, and soft tannins. It’s often used to bring perfume and lift to blends, but the best standalone versions are lovely precisely because they don’t try too hard. Light, fresh, and quietly aromatic is usually the sweet spot.

It’s genetically related to Pinot Noir through the same Pinot and Gouais Blanc parentage, but it has its own personality: more immediate, more exuberant, and often more forgiving at the table.In the vineyard, Gamay buds early and can be productive, so yield control matters. It thrives on the granitic soils of Beaujolais, especially in the crus, where it can move from juicy and playful to structured and quietly serious. It’s also found in the Loire and a few other cool-to-moderate regions where freshness is easy to preserve.In the glass, Gamay often shows red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, violet, pepper, and a bright, mouthwatering lift. Some versions are simple and gulpable; the best cru Beaujolais can be savory, mineral, and surprisingly ageworthy. It’s a grape we love for its ability to be joyful without being unserious.
