STEP BY STEP CHAPTER INITIATION

To start a high school DECA chapter, you need a school-recognized advisor and at least ten student members. Membership dues must also be paid to both DECA Inc. and your local association for everyone involved.

Additionally, the chapter must follow all specific rules set by your local chartered association. Finding a dedicated teacher to lead the group and handle these steps is the first official requirement to get started.

Step 1: DECA Inc. Requirements

The New Mexico DECA chapters are managed by the state's Career Technical Leadership Project (CTLP). To start one, your chapter and advisor must follow NM-specific rules, which usually tie into the school's business or marketing classes.

To officially move forward, you must email the New Mexico DECA Chartered Association Director, with the email provided on the NM DECA Website (Button Bellow), showing interest in starting a new chapter.

Letting her know your school's interest in starting a chapter is a required step to move onto the next official registration materials.

Step 2: Contact Chartered Association Director

Once you confirm that you meet both the national and New Mexico DECA requirements, you need official approval from your school's administration. This means pitching the idea to your principal or Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director to secure their backing.

Step 3: School Approval

Once your school administration approves the program, the final step is to officially register the chapter online.

You will need to fill out the new chapter request form on the DECA website, making sure to select New Mexico as your state and High School as your division.

After your New Mexico association advisor signs off on the request, you will receive an automated email containing your membership system login credentials, and DECA’s New Advisor Liaison will contact your advisor within a week to help get everything running.

Step 4: Registration

Once your chapter is officially approved, the final step to make it official is submitting your membership roster online.

Your advisor will need to log into the DECA membership system and enter the names of all student and professional members.

After entering the roster, make sure to actually hit the submit button and send the required dues to DECA Inc. Students are not considered official, registered DECA members—and cannot compete—until their dues are fully processed.
