In judo, children learn how to safely throw, hold, and control a partner using technique rather than strength. There are many different skills to learn, and sessions are designed to be fun, engaging, and suitable for beginners.

Judo is also much more than a sport. It is built around strong values such as self-respect, courtesy, courage, humility, friendship, honesty, and respect for others - both on and off the mat.

Is judo safe for children?

Judo is a physical sport that involves working closely with others, and safety is a central part of how it is taught. At Megumi, children learn how to move, balance, and fall safely before practising any throwing techniques.

Sessions are carefully structured, age-appropriate, and closely supervised, with an emphasis on control, respect, and looking after training partners.

What age can children start judo?

Children can usually start judo from around 4 years old, depending on the class. We focus on age-appropriate activities that build coordination, confidence, and enjoyment of movement. Please get in touch if you’re unsure which session would be most suitable.

Is judo suitable for boys and girls?

Accepted Answer

Yes — absolutely!

Judo is for everyone, and girls and boys train together, learning the same skills and values. The club is proud to offer an environment where girls feel just as welcome, confident, and capable on the mat as boys.

Judo encourages respect, resilience, and self-belief for all children.

Do children need experience to join?

Accepted Answer

No experience is needed at all. Most of our children start judo for the very first time with us. Our sessions are beginner-friendly and games-based, allowing every child to learn at their own pace in a supportive environment.

What do I wear to judo?

For beginners, we recommend arriving to judo in comfortable clothing. T-shirt, joggers, leggings, that type of thing.

Try to avoid sequins, zips, or similar.

We have lots of spare judogi (judo uniform - jackets/trousers) to use until you are ready to buy your own.

Can parents stay and watch?

Yes, parents are very welcome to stay and watch sessions. In fact, we'd very much prefer that you do!

We understand that it’s reassuring, especially when children are new, and we love having families involved in the club.

There are plenty of seats/tables and a solid supply of tea and coffee (and biscuits!).

Judo is a fantastic sport for building up your confidence, fitness, making new friends and in lots of different ways. It's also an inclusive sport - anyone can take part in judo! Any age, any ability. Give it a go!

How does judo help with confidence and behaviour?

These are skills that often carry over into school and everyday life.

What are the judo belts (grades)?

When you've been coming to judo for a while, you'll soon be ready to get your next belt. You can do this by demonstrating that you have the required knowledge and skills you need for each belt - most of the time, you can do this at the club.

Belt colours follow this order: 
 - White or red (beginner)
 - Yellow
 - Orange
 - Green
 - Blue
 - Brown
 - Black
