Can you add more families to the giving circle?

Unfortunately, no, not at this time. We set up the giving circle with the consent of all the families, with the understanding that there would be seven. We are also completely at capacity. We sincerely apologize.

Question 2

Can you help campaign for a family that I help?

Accepted Answer

There's nothing we do that's particularly special in supporting the families we've committed to. Families need dedicated advocates to get them consistent support—for example, recurring options on Chuffed/GFM are a useful vehicle for getting small pledges to ensure steady support.

We encourage you to speak with the family, connect with their other allies, form a group chat with those allies, and brainstorm ideas for raising funds, including offline (e.g., events, flyering). This will do far more than we could ever do with our very limited capacity.

Why recurring?

Recurring donations ensure that Palestinians get help without the humiliating labor of asking for help or being visible online. They provide assurance of housing and recurring needs, such as medications. They also ensure reliability as the situation on the ground remains extremely fragile and volatile.

What about the ceasefire?

The government media office reported on 22 December that only 17,819 trucks had entered of 42,800 agreed in the ceasefire deal (244 trucks per day vs. the required 600, or 41%). 80% of the trucks are commercial, NOT aid. The nutritional quality of the commercial goods is poor, and fresh, nutritious food remains at a very high cost, inaccessible without money while nearly everyone is unemployed in a cash crisis. The IPC reported in December that 100,000 people in Gaza are still at IPC Phase 5 (“catastrophic”), while most of Gaza is at “acute malnutrition." The context of hunger in Gaza is also important, because malnutrition doesn’t change overnight, and people need sustained assistance to recover.

Isn’t it better to give to NGOs?

The situation is rapidly changing, but we support direct mutual aid as part of a bigger humanitarian picture and under ongoing blockade that limits aid.

Is it ethical?

Accepted Answer

Gaza Funds: "The fundraisers you give to allow people a chance to survive another day...We would rather our people pay inflated prices for food than for them to be dead."

Fundamentally, we agree that the circumstances driving the reliance on foreign aid (mutual or humanitarian) must be ended, and are deeply unfair. Our duty is to pair mutual aid with our actions to end the genocide (and the blockade, as a crucial part of the genocide), which must be our primary focus and goal. If we want to end this exploitation, we have to end the genocide first. Donors, and Palestinians buying goods, are not driving up prices and creating a liquidity and inflation crisis; the occupation is doing this.

Is it better to give to the Giving Circle rather than individual links?

Accepted Answer

No, because the giving circle is just several individual links grouped together. These are families just like every other one on socials—frustrated, exhausted, and desperate, forced by a genocide to turn to asking strangers for help online. Please show your respect, generosity, and creativity to Palestinians raising survival funds.

I’m overwhelmed. What do I do?

Our feeling of overwhelm is a misunderstanding of what we’re being asked to do—to pay very serious attention, and to try, and to treat Palestinians with basic respect and dignity. Remember a simple thing: you alone cannot do it. It doesn’t depend on you. It depends on all of us. Chipping away. Finding new, bold ways to share. Reframe how you see need around the core belief in Palestinian life. The overwhelm is not ours, but what the occupation has generated primarily in Palestinians. Release your guilt, be kind, talk to people as people, and do what you can.
