[ Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) (n.) ]
A cosplay style featuring full-body suits and oversized anime-style masks to create a doll-like appearance.
Kigurumi is a form of cosplay that originated from anime stageshows but also became an own distinct subculture over the decades. It's known for its appearance inspired by anime figures and dolls. The wearer uses a fiberglass or plastic mask and a skin-tone spandex bodysuit called a hadatai in order to archive this look. Kigurumi performers mostly don't talk, but rely on expressive body language to act out their character. The view out of the mask is very limited, so 'kigs' often rely on handlers when performing in public.
