How to repost on Instagram in 3 different ways

Learn how to repost on Instagram to share content you find exciting. Plus, discover best practices for reposting others’ content respectfully.

Social media is all about dance trends, high-speed cooking videos and photos of your friends’ pets. It’s also all about sharing content you find interesting, exciting or important.

But on Instagram, there’s no built-in feature for sharing other people’s content to your newsfeed. So what can you do if you’re scrolling on the app and spot an informative infographic or cute animal pic to show to your followers?

Under the right circumstances, you can “re-gram” photos and videos to your feed. But no matter if you’re a content creator, business or casual user, it’s important to go about reposting thoughtfully and respectfully.

We’re here to help. Read on to learn how to repost on Instagram – it’s not the most straightforward process, but we have the workarounds.

3 ways to repost on Instagram

When you spot a post or video you’d like to share, you can add it to an Instagram Story (which we’ll detail below). But what if the account is private or you want to repost the content to your feed?

Because no reposting feature exists in the Instagram app for these circumstances, it takes some creativity and patience to share other people’s content. Here’s how to share someone’s Instagram post using three different methods:

1. Repost with screenshots

You can take a screengrab of almost anything on your phone, which extends to Instagram photos. To use the screenshot method to repost a photo:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Locate the post you’d like to share.
  3. Take a screenshot of the post.
  4. Find the post in your image library and use the editing tools to crop out any unwanted visual information.
  5. Reopen Instagram again.
  6. Click on the plus (+) sign in the top right corner to create a post.
  7. Select the photo in your camera roll and hit the “Next” button in the top right corner.
  8. Choose to edit your photos, add a filter or leave them as-is, then hit the “Next” button again.
  9. Add a caption, location or music, then tag people in the photo and sync the post to other social media platforms.
  10. Press the “Share” button in the top right corner.

If you wish to repost a video, swap out screenshotting in step three with screen recording the video with the built-in feature on your phone. In step four, trim the video in the image library to the desired length instead of cropping an image.

2. Use third-party apps to repost on Instagram

Where there’s a need for a social media workaround, there’s almost always an app to help. Re-gram photos with one of the third-party apps below:

  • Reposta
  • Download Gram
  • Repost: For Instagram

3. Use your stories

This workaround won’t allow you to repost someone else’s post to your feed, but it will let you share the content to your Story, provided the account is public. Here’s how:

  1. Open your Instagram account.
  2. Locate the post or Reel you’d like to share.
  3. Click on the paper plane icon at the bottom left corner of the post.
  4. From the pop-up menu, choose the option to add the post to your Story.
  5. Add any desired stickers, text and filters, then hit the arrow in the bottom right corner.
  6. Press “Share.”

Pro tip: When you share a feed post to your Story, the original poster will be tagged, so there’s no need to tag them manually.

Etiquette for sharing posts

You should never repost content without permission.

Go ahead and ask the person whose content you want to repost, or take a peek at the caption to see if they encourage sharing. And remember to tag the creator of the original post in your caption – it’s a nice gesture.

Here’s the etiquette for Instagram reshares:

  • Private profiles: If you’re trying to use the third method above – reposting to your Story – you’ll hit a roadblock if the original poster has a private account. When you click on the paper plane icon, you won’t see the option to share the content to your Instagram Story because of this privacy setting. You can, however, send this post to anyone else in your circles who follows the user via direct message (DM). You should never repost content from a private account without the user’s permission. Their settings are in place for a reason, and they may not want their content seen by anyone outside their social circle.
  • Permissions: As we said above, asking for permission before sharing a post on Instagram is respectful. If it’s a content creator or brand, chances are they’ll be thrilled you gave them free social media marketing. If the original poster enthusiastically gives you permission, give them credit in the caption and explain why you’re excited to share their content.
  • Spread the word: Public accounts are often thrilled to have their content shared on other platforms. You can share Instagram posts from these profiles with friends and followers on other socials by clicking on the three dots in the photo's upper right-hand corner and clicking “Share” from the pop-up menu. You can then send this post to a contact via text or WhatsApp, or link it on other social media apps. Keep in mind this feature will not work on Instagram content from private accounts.

Share your content with Linktree

Once you’ve mastered the art of re-gramming, level up your social media presence by connecting your Instagram to the rest of your web presence.

Your Instagram bio is the perfect place to introduce followers to the rest of your web presence—but it’s only 150 characters. Adding a Linktree to your bio allows you to keep your socials connected. You can link out to other platforms like Twitter, TikTok and a personal website, all in one spot. The more places people can find you, the more people will see the content you share.
