In 1928, the Third International adopted a resolution on the right of self-determination for African Americans in the Black Belt, in the southeastern US. Over the next decade, this resolution guided the CPUSA’s regional focus in the US South, as a frontline organization in the struggle against white supremacy. This was a period of great experiments in building an independent multiracial working class movement in North America, a movement that confronted the remnants of slavery, under conditions that foreshadowed the fascism that would soon develop in Europe. Across the cities and rural areas of the US South, communists engaged existing traditions of struggle, and planted seeds for the growth of the movement against racism in the following decades. This reader presents primary documents from the period to aid the study of the history, theory, and political application of the Black Belt thesis. Vision for the Future: An Intellectual History of the 1955 Bandung Conference

At the heart of Sitaram Yechury’s worldview was Marxism as shaped by the Indian Communist movement. This is a Marxism that is not purely theoretical. It seeks to not only understand the Indian reality, but also, through struggles on the ground, to transform this reality in a democratic and progressive direction. It is rooted in centuries of struggles in India to enhance sovereignty not only of the territory but also of the people themselves. Sitaram Yechury’s commitment to a secular and socialist ‘idea of India’ is not driven by a desire to create an alternative to neoliberal Hindutva within the confines of the faltering republic. His entire praxis is shaped by his belief in the need to transcend the grotesque contradictions of neoliberal Hindutva and move to a deeper democratic dispensation that would open the door to socialism. It came out of his deep conviction in socialism and Marxism, and his unshaken commitment to bettering the lives of the Indian working classes. His critique of Hindutva and neoliberalism is not, therefore, from the standpoint of liberalism, but from a Communist perspective. Praxis of a Socialist is an exploration of the Marxism of Sitaram Yechury. It collects his key texts about Marxism, about the struggles in India, and about the necessity for a socialist transformation from the grip of capitalism.

EMS Namboodiripad is not a figure from the past. He is a beacon for India’s future. EMS began his public life as a Gandhian, before moving to the Nehru-led left camp in the Congress. Eventually EMS came to Communism and joined the Communist Party of India (CPI). He became a preeminent leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) after the split in the CPI. As India’s first Communist Chief Minister, EMS presented new dimensions not just to the country’s polity but to Communist theory and practice as well. He was a creator and interpreter of the famed ‘Kerala model’ of development which led the state to make remarkable achievements in sectors such as education, literacy, healthcare, land reforms, etc. Under EMS, the left showed what was possible to improve people’s lives through parliamentary and other ways, even while functioning within the constraints of the capitalist system. P. Govinda Pillai first met EMS in the early 1940s, and the two remained comrades and friends till EMS’s death in 1998. Himself a prominent Marxist intellectual and Communist leader, PG traces the ups and downs in EMS’s political life and charts his ideological development in this engaging biography. In his writing, PG combines the analytical rigour of the historian with the passion of an activist and the warmth of a close friend of over half a century.
