What is SAFE?

SAFE stands for Safer Areas For Everyone.
It is a project by Northern Ireland Alternatives which aims to raise awareness on exploitation occurring in our communities.

Through education we hope individuals and local communities are empowered to identify exploitation when it happens, can safely report it and as a result, know how to get support from local services.

SAFE is funded by a programme by the Executive Office known as Communities in Transition (CiT).
CiT aims to decentre and delegitimise paramilitary control in our communities.

This project will focus on raising awareness on three main forms of exploitation:
- Child Criminal Exploitation,
- Sexual Exploitation,
- Monetary Exploitation.
Awareness is key to prevention to combat these insidious forms of abuse in our communities.

Who are Northern Ireland Alternatives?

Northern Ireland Alternatives (NIA) is a government accredited restorative justice programme that aims to promote and develop non-violent community responses to the issues of low-level crime and anti-social behaviour in areas across Northern Ireland.

What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative justice brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.

This is part of a wider field called restorative practice.
Restorative practice can be used anywhere to prevent conflict, build relationships and repair harm by enabling people to communicate effectively and positively.

Restorative practice is increasingly being used in schools, children’s services, workplaces, hospitals, communities and the criminal justice system.

Restorative practice can involve both a proactive approach to preventing harm and conflict and activities that repair harm where conflicts have already arisen.

What is Exploitation?

Exploitation is when someone, or a group of people, tricks, or misleads you into doing things for them that are not right.

Perpetrators take advantage of you to get you to do things that are to their benefit.

These situations often start small and spiral out of control, and you end up trapped, doing things you don’t want to do, and know aren’t right, but you are made to feel like there’s no way out.

This is exploitation, which is a type of abuse.

If you’re exploited it’s important to understand that it is never your fault, the people who do it are abusing you and they're in the wrong, not you.

SAFE seeks to raise awareness on 3 key types of exploitation; child criminal, sexual and monetary exploitation.
