Detailed explanation

Bill Wasik, a senior editor at Harper’s Magazine, coined the term “flash mob” in 2003, describing a group of individuals who participated in harmless and insignificant performances for entertainment and dispersed immediately after. However, the phrase’s meaning has changed over time.

Initially, those involved used text messages, blogs and emails to organize flash mobs and meet in public. Recently, people have started using social media platforms, such as YouTube and Twitter, to leverage flash mobs’ social awareness and political influence. Additionally, people choreograph flash mobs and often use them as a guerrilla marketing strategy for brand and product visibility.

One famous flash mob incident occurred in January 2009 at Liverpool Street Station in England, where 400 tourists and employees burst into a song and dance number as they demonstrated their hip-hop, ballroom and disco skills. The performance was so engaging that T-Mobile capitalized on its virality and used it for an ad campaign. The company even bagged an award for the TV commercial of the year.
