🐝 What is HFP?

The Health Fluency Project (HFP) is a student-led organization at Case Western Reserve University dedicated to making healthcare more accessible through health literacy education. We create and deliver free workshops and educational resources that help underserved communities communicate confidently with healthcare providers and navigate the healthcare system.

🌍 Why does it matter?

Language and health literacy barriers prevent millions of people from fully understanding their healthcare. About 54% of adults in Cuyahoga County fall below the highest level of reading proficiency, and 21% of adults are at the lowest reading level, which is directly correlated with low health literacy. By improving healthcare communication and providing accessible educational resources, HFP helps empower individuals to advocate for their health while working toward a more equitable healthcare system.

What is HFP?

👥 Who can join?

Any CWRU student who is passionate about health equity, patient advocacy, education, or community service is welcome! While many members are pre-health students, no prior experience or specific major is required, just a desire to make a meaningful impact.

💛 What do members do?

Members can get involved in a variety of ways:
- Gain non-clinical volunteering hours with community partners
- Teach or assist with community workshops (Advocates Team)
- Design accessible health education materials and handouts (Design Team)
- Help promote health literacy and equitable healthcare access

Joining HFP is easy!

1. Attend a General Body Meeting or HFP Campus Event

2. Join our Advocates or Design Team.
3. Volunteer at workshops and community events.
4. Start making an impact through health literacy and patient advocacy.
