I’m not usually one to be sucked in by accolades and awards, but for some reason, heading into Ballina on a Friday morning my memory was jogged about Baker 51 having won something or other recently…

Actually, I know why I thought of it, it’s because I was bloody STARVING!

So a quick Google search for an Eircode, stuck it into Waze, and off I went. Down a (dark?!?!) alley across from Aldi, I found the place. Loads of covered outside tables, and a welcoming entrance with steps up to an indoor seating area…

Lads, they have bread. Lots of bread.

Plain bread, fancy bread, light bread, dark bread, square bread, roundy bread…

Lots. Of. Bread.

There’s also the coolest bread slicing machine I’ve ever seen… it’s like one of those fancy Italian coffee machines, except it’s for slicing bread instead of making coffee…*

I was on the move today so it was going to be a takeaway (…I’ll definitely be back for a sit down…) of some description..

After looking through the menu, and deciding on something that would be acceptably edible while driving, I settled for “The Morning Toastie”.

It’s like childhood wrapped up in a sandwich… two big slices of toasted sourdough, with chopped up bacon, and even more choppedey-up egg, swaddled in the perfect amount of onion marmalade and ballymaloe relish… kind of like eggy soldiers on speed.

The perfect brekkie sambo is alive and well, and living in Ballina.

Coffee was a cappuccino, with the smoothest creamy foam, and a lovely lush blend of bean, that was the nicest I’ve had in a long time, and was served with a sweet sized piece of rocky road on top of the cup… damn you Baker 51, but the little sweet treat was enough to make me a life long customer.

42/10 for sandwichiness…
(…extra 6547 points out of ten for the free sweet thingy)

*please do NOT attempt to slice coffee in the bread slicer…
There's a wait at 20 to 25 minutes to sit and there desserts are yummy but savoury items needs little more polishing we ordered halloumi melt and baker bowl with different pastries which are delicious but they served cold flat white. Anyways we had good experience and service was nice
Loved this place so much. The biscoff cruffin was phenomenal, if you go you should 100% get one.
