There's Joy in Grieving: Finding hope and embracing healing in the midst of lossApril McElligottPaperbackMost of us are never really taught how to grieve. We are handed platitudes, given a timeline, and expected to move on. April McElligott's There's Joy in Grieving pushes back against all of that. Drawing from her own experience of loss, McElligott writes the way a trusted friend might speak to you, honestly, without flinching, and without pretending there is a right way to do any of this. She does not offer a step-by-step path through grief. She offers something more useful, the reassurance that whatever you are feeling is allowed, and that healing does not require you to stop hurting first. The book sits with the full weight of loss, whether that is the death of someone you loved, the end of a relationship, or the quiet grief of a life that did not go the way you planned. McElligott explores the anger, the exhaustion, the unexpected moments of lightness, and the way grief has a habit of arriving again just when you thought you were past it. Despite what the title might suggest, McElligott is not asking readers to feel better. She is asking them to feel more fully, because joy and grief, she argues, have always been capable of sharing the same moment. There's Joy in Grieving is for anyone who has ever felt alone in their loss, or wondered if what they are feeling is normal, or simply needed someone to tell them they are not doing it wrong. It is a genuinely human book about one of the most human experiences there is.
