One of the best new discoveries for us for the entire trip! The wines definitely showed place and a sense of origin. Swartland has that special character that we definitely felt in the wines as well. How a wine can be both fiery and marble cool, both racy and sinuously slow, I don’t know, but this absolutely thrilling wine somehow is just that. It is ginger and pebble, lime and marmalade. It flutters across your throat like a butterfly on flowers in a breeze, and holds itself as still as a stone in a mountain stream. It swirls and ripples from the beeswax of Chenin to the honey of Hárslevelű, the apricot of Viognier to the acacia of Marsanne. It tastes of candied green angelica and white pepper and sweet fennel and the faintest note of toasted cumin. I was transfixed by how yinyang/inyo it is in the duality and complementarity of its nature – these opposing forces creating so much tension that the structure of the wine is unshakeable; weight and weightlessness balanced to exquisite precision, energy flowing with what just feels like ‘wholeness’ of harmony and circularity. It tastes like a wine that should cost a lot more than £24.

An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character... these are terrific wines.

The Syrah and Mourvèdre were fermented with 100% whole bunches, while the Carignan was destemmed for clarity and lift, then blended early after malolactic fermentation and returned to barrel. Matured in 20% new oak with Stockinger and Mittelberger named as the preferred cooperages, the oak impact is subtle and structural rather than overt. Velvety yet energetic, the wine shows dark forest fruits, savory spice and fine acidity, with the Carignan providing much of that freshness.
