Mac Campus Specific

No, for students living on Macdonald Campus, meals are not part of your rent. 

Students are able to add oneCard dollars to their student account, which will allow them to take advantage of the dining spaces on both Mac and downtown Campuses.

Both Laird Hall and Eco Residence have kitchens with all traditional appliances, and so students are able to cook their own meals. All residents in Laird are assigned food storage lockers corresponding with their room numbers to store their food in the communal kitchens.

Are meals included as part of my rent?

Security Services - Parking

All parking passes must be obtained through Security Services.

Are parking passes available to residents?

Go to the Mac Campus Residence Life Office during opening hours to ask to be let in. 

Outside of opening hours, you can go to the security office in Laird Hall and they will let you into your room.

Cost of being let into your room by security is 5$ paid in cash.

Help! I'm locked out of my room - what do I do?

Laundry is free at all residence locations. You are required to buy your own laundry detergent/dryer sheets/laundry supplies.

Who do I contact for a maintenance issue in a common area?

We encourage you to submit a maintenance report directly in order to ensure the issue is addressed as soon as possible. 

You can also let your front desk know (either in person or over email), and they will submit a maintenance request. 

If the issue could cause serious damage to the building (such as flooding) or cause harm to a student (such as a broken window), please call Macdonald Security at 514-398-7777 to inform them of the situation. 

Who do I contact for a maintenance issue in a common area?

Yes, if you have a private bathroom, you are responsible for purchasing your own toilet paper and bathroom cleaning supplies. You are responsible for cleaning your private bathroom.

Roommate Agreement

If you are having problems getting along with your roommate, we first encourage you to sit down and have a frank & productive conversation about your concerns. It helps if you have some specific examples and suggestions of ways to resolve or improve your concerns. You can use the Roommate Agreement as a tool to facilitate this conversation.

If this conversation still does not improve things, you can reach out to your RLM who can facilitate a conversation between the two of you, to attempt to resolve the issue. This mediation process must be agreed to by both roommates.

If you are concerned for your own safety or the safety of your roommate, you should reach out to Mac Campus Security at 514-398-7777 immediately and explain the situation. They will then escalate it to the appropriate resource.

Feeling homesick is completely normal, even if you're excited to be here. Most people around you are probably feeling the same, even if they're not showing it.

We would first encourage you to go to the events put on by RLifers as a way to meet new people - you can find these events on our instagram.

I'm feeling really homesick - is there someone I can talk to?

If you are worried your friend has had too much to drink and are unsure what to do, you should call Mac Campus Security and ask them to come assess your friend. Their number is: 514-398-7777. They will then decide if 911 should be called.

If you have extreme and immediate concerns about the safety of your friend (i.e. decreased breathing, seizures), please call 911 directly before calling Protection Patrol.

Signs of alcohol poisoning:
- Confusion (unsure where they are or what's going on)
- Difficulty staying conscious (drifting in and out of sleep despite others trying to keep them awake)
- Low body temperature (skin feels damp & clammy)
- Slow breathing (less than 8 breaths a minute, long pauses between breaths)
- Vomiting (yes, vomiting is a sign of alcohol poisoning - your body can no longer process the alcohol and is trying to protect itself by expelling it)

Call McGill Protection IMMEDIATELY if your friend is experiencing any of the above symptoms.

What do "quiet hours" mean?

Quiet hours are in effect from 11pm - 9am everyday.
During the exam period, quiet hours are in effect from 9pm - 9am

During quiet hours, residents are expected to keep noise to a minimum volume. This generally means no loud music, no instruments, and no excessive yelling. A good rule of thumb is that you should not be able to hear anything from the hallway if your door is closed.

When quiet hours are not in effect, every resident must still ensure the noise they are emitting is not negatively affecting the surrounding community. This includes yelling, singing, or playing music loudly. Consideration hours are in effect 24 hours a day, every day of the week. When students are creating an excessive amount of noise, they are in violation of this community standard.

Excessive noise past the designated quiet hours may result in fines and other sanctions.

What is the policy on vapes or e-cigarettes in residence?

Vapes and e-cigarettes are strictly prohibited in residence.

Having or using these products in residence will result in disciplinary action.

Can I drink in common rooms/areas?

No, residents cannot drink in common rooms, hallways or any communal space. Open alcohol (seal broken) is prohibited everywhere in residence except for a student's private living space.

This policy is in accordance with McGill's policy against open alcohol in communal spaces. Additionally, this policy is in place to ensure that residents who are not comfortable around alcohol (be that for personal, spiritual or other reasons), are still able to use and enjoy the common areas.

Failure to uphold this policy will result in disciplinary action.

Can I drink alcohol in common rooms/common areas?

Are there any rules for decorating my room?

Only non-marking adhesives are permitted for securing decorations to the walls. Pushpins, hooks, nails, duct tape, double sided tape, are not permitted as they are known to damage walls and doors. Damage reports are completed prior to a student moving in and after they have moved out - if a student was found to have damaged a room, a fine/restitution will be charged to their student account.

Residents are welcome to bring their own personal items, however we cannot store any items that are currently in the room. Students cannot leave items in the common rooms or communal building spaces.

Used furniture or furniture off the street is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Used furniture significantly increases the risk of bed bugs in residence.

Only recognized service animals and emotional support animals are allowed in residence.

Are discounted transit passes available to McGill students?

Yes! Full-time McGill students can purchase a discounted student OPUS Card through Minerva, which allows them access to the Montreal bus and metro system.

To purchase discounted OPUS card:
1. Sign in to Minerva
2. Under the Student Menu menu, select "Order your reduced-Fare OPUS Card"
3. After agreeing to the terms and conditions, you will be redirected to the STM website where you will pay the $15 fee**
4. Your reduced-fare OPUS Card will be mailed to you directly by the STM (allow 7 business days)

**If you are not eligible to order your card in Minerva or are unable to pay by credit card, you will need to go to the STM photo studio at Berri-UQAM metro station.

uPrint Basics

How does uPrint work?

uPrint is the campus-wide system McGill uses to allow students to print, scan and copy documents directly from their personal computers.

Prior to using uPrint, you must download the required uPrint drivers to your personal computer in order to access McGill printers. All charges are charged to your student account, and you will be billed at the end of every month. You can use your student ID card at the printers to sign in.

All international students are automatically charged the annual McGill International Health Insurance (IHI) fee upon registration at McGill University in the fall and winter terms.

The insurance provider is Medavie Blue Cross.

What are the rules for working on or off campus?

In order to be authorized to work during an academic term, you must be enrolled full-time. For undergraduate and non-thesis students, full-time means you are enrolled for a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

Your study permit will have an authorization allowing you to work if you are eligible to do so. If you do not have this authorization, you can request an amendment.
