What is jiu jitsu?

It's a traditional Japanese martial art, which uses joint locks, throws and strikes to defend a variety of different attacks.

What do I need to wear/bring for my first session?

Loose fitting clothes, hairtie and a waterbottle will do! You only need a gi if your commiting to the sport.

How much are the sessions?

Your first session is free! After this, sessions cost £3 per class.

Where do we train?

In the sports centre main hall - any changes will be communicated as soon as possible.

Can I join at any point of the year?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Check the training times and turn up to any convenient class to meet the instructor - Sensei Tom - it helps if you can be there 5 mins early. Our committee will also be on hand to help guide you.

Do I need any experience?

No! We cater our classes for all abilities, shapes and experience. Progress is continuous and people learn at their own pace, so there are no novice classes before you start training.

Question 7

I’m not particularly fit/strong/scary looking – can I do this?

Accepted Answer

Almost certainly yes, but you’ll only know if you try. Jiu Jitsu works on the principle of redirecting an attacker’s force and momentum against them, using the minimum necessary effort to produce the maximum effect.  This means you don’t have to be particularly big or strong to do well, and you don’t have to be fit to start with, although you will find you get fitter!
