My wife and I chose Ume to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and what an incredible choice it was. Ume is a little piece of heaven nestled on a peaceful mountainside in Yamazoe, Nara. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. Throughout our stay, we were treated like family, making us feel completely at home from the very beginning. The property is housed in a beautifully restored 130 year old kominka that seamlessly blends modern comforts with its original architectural charm. Every detail has been thoughtfully preserved and enhanced… it’s absolutely stunning. The meals, which were included with our stay, were curated to an exceptional standard. Each dish felt worthy of a fine dining restaurant, yet was served with the warmth and care of a home cooked meal. It was a perfect balance of sophistication and comfort. We also enjoyed Ume’s Finnish-style sauna, which was a highlight of our visit. It’s easy to see why it received a Saunachelin Award in 2020. Ume is the kind of place you want to keep secret, yet can’t help but recommend to everyone you know. Our stay was truly memorable, and we left with wonderful memories that will stay with us for years to come. We’re already looking forward to returning.

An experience that is truly hard to put into words. We stayed one night with the 2-meal plan at Ume Yamazoe and it exceeded every expectation.<br><br>After the energy of Japan's big cities, arriving here felt like stepping into another world entirely. The location is so quiet and peaceful — the kind of stillness that is increasingly rare and deeply restorative. We genuinely disconnected, and that felt like a gift.<br><br>The food was exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese style, and the craftsmanship in every dish was evident — beautifully presented, thoughtfully prepared, and absolutely delicious. Each meal felt like an experience in itself.<br><br>Our room was a delight — a wonderful space that perfectly complemented the tranquility of the surroundings. The facilities throughout were excellent.<br><br>What elevated the entire stay above and beyond was the staff. Every single person was incredibly kind and attentive — and in particular, Yuki, who treated us like cherished guests from the moment we arrived, attending to every little detail with warmth and genuine care. That level of hospitality is something we will not forget.<br><br>A special thank you also to Sunny in Japan for the recommendation on her YouTube channel — she was absolutely right about this place.<br><br>If you are looking for somewhere to truly pause, recharge and be looked after with exceptional care, Ume Yamazoe is it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The food was absolutely delicious and used local ingredients. You could taste how fresh and thoughtful each meal was.<br><br>The sauna left us feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.<br><br>The views were incredible.<br><br>The room was peaceful, relaxing, and so cozy. It was the best nights sleep we’ve had on our vacation.<br><br>The staff were so kind, attentive, and fun to talk to.<br><br>We will be recommending this beautiful place to everyone and hope to return!
